WHAT IS TEXAS TRASH?
While I can’t pin down where the name came from, Texas Trash is made up of various cereals, nuts and pretzels among other things.
It is then coated in a butter/spice mixture that is baked at a low temperature to make the spices stick onto the ingredients creating a delicious and obsessive flavor.
WHAT ELSE CAN I ADD TO THIS?
While we like the combination that we use in this recipe other ideas that you can add to this recipe include:
- Bugles
- Goldfish
- Pecans
- Rye Chips
- Cheez-Its
- Oyster Crackers
Those are just a few other ideas that we have added to this Party Mix before and we love all of them, but keep coming back to our normal recipe.
CAN I MAKE THIS IN THE SLOW COOKER?
Yes absolutely! We have made a lot of our party mixes in the slow cooker and this is one of them that you can do to as well.
To slow cook – prepare according to directions and then place in a 6 quart crockpot, cover and cook on low for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, stirring every 20 minutes or so so it doesn’t burn.
DO I HAVE TO USE SALTED BUTTER?
While we omit actual salt from this recipe and use other seasonings to add that flavor, the salt does come from the butter.
If you prefer a less “salty” mix, then you can use unsalted butter. If you don’t find it salty enough for your taste, just add some in the mix as you’d like.
HOW TO STORE:
We like to keep ours in a large lidded bowl, but you can also store in a ziptop bag and it will keep for about 4-6 weeks.
You can also store in the freezer in freezer friendly bags for about 5-6 months.
To defrost, remove from the freezer onto the countertop until it comes to room temperature, then serve.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Rice Chex may also be used.
- You can use smoked paprika to give it a little more kick.
- If you like things spicy, you could add 2 teaspoons of your favorite buffalo sauce.
- You can substitute or add other ingredients, see above on some of my ideas.
- This recipe can be frozen, see my storing tips above.
- This Party Mix can be made in the slow cooker, instructions on how to do that are included above as well.
