With only 7 ingredients and 30 minutes these Ranch Ham and Cheese Pinwheels are a fun and delicious baked appetizer that everyone has come to love.
Pinwheels, oh what can I say about them? I absolutely love them, they are so delicious, they are super easy. I could go on and on about them seriously.
These Ranch Ham and Cheeses Pinwheels have all my favorite flavors in them, ranch, ham, cheese and green onions. I mean the name pretty much speaks for the recipe.
There is no surprises in this recipe, it is straight forward, easy and absolutely delicious. We make these all the time as the kids looooove them.
We usually have all the ingredients on hand, which is nice so they really are fast to whip up when we want a quick recipe to have as a side, appetizer or whenever.
I usually make these Ham and Cheese Pinwheels every Sunday when it’s football season, my boys love sitting and munching on them.
Since I have 3 teens we usually double the recipe because you know how boys can get, they will devour everything quickly so we always need more of these.
Some of my other favorite pinwheel recipes we have on our site include Pickle Dip Pinwheels, Spinach Dip Pinwheels and Italian Pinwheels.
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- The ingredients are easy to find and accessible, a lot you will probably have on hand.
- You can double this recipe easily to serve more people.
- You can dress it up or down depending on your flavor profile.
HOW TO MAKE RANCH HAM AND CHEESE PINWHEELS, STEP BY STEP:
- Roll out the crescent dough on a clean work surface. Brush with the ยผ cup ranch dressing.
- Top with the ham, then the cheese, and the green onions. Evenly distribute the ingredients as best you can over the dough. With the long edge facing you, roll the dough into a log, making it as tightly rolled as possible. Cut the log into 12 even pieces.
- Place each piece, cut side down into a section of the muffin tin, set aside.
- In a small bowl, mix together the melted butter and the ranch seasoning. Brush the tops of the pinwheels with the mixture. Bake at 375 degrees F for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown. Serve with more ranch for dipping, optional.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT RANCH HAM AND CHEESE PINWHEELS:
DO I HAVE TO USE A CRESCENT ROLL DOUGH SHEET?
We like to use a crescent dough sheet for these as it makes them easier to roll up and you don’t have to pinch the seams together.
But if you can’t find a dough sheet you can absolutely jus use regular crescent rolls but make sure to tightly pinch together the seams so nothing leaks out.
WHAT KIND OF CHEESE CAN I USE?
For this particular recipe we used shredded cheddar cheese but you can use whatever cheese you have on hand, like Colby Jack, Monterey Jack, Gouda, etc.
I’m not too fond of it with Mozzarella cheese, but if you want to try that you certainly can, I just don’t think the flavors mesh as well as the other types of cheeses.
WHAT HAM IS BEST TO USE?
Diced up ham is the best, using deli sliced ham does not work as well nor does it give the amount of ham flavor that we are looking for in these Pinwheels.
HOW TO STORE:
Since they contain cheese in them they are best stored in an airtight container such as a Tupperware container or a zip top bag and they will keep fresh for up to 4 days.
To re-heat I like to place them on a baking sheet and stick them in the oven at 375 until they are just warmed through compared to the microwave where they could get soggy.
These can also be frozen. I recommend freezing after they are baked and then let fully cool and place in a freezer bag where they will keep for up to 1 month.
Again to reheat just use the same method as you would if they were refrigerated, you can let defrost in the refrigerator overnight first or you can reheat from frozen.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- We use crescent dough sheets for this recipe, but you can use crescent rolls if you cannot find the sheets and just press the seams together.
- Diced up ham works best for this as it is larger, I do not recommend using deli sliced ham.
- We use shredded cheddar cheese, but you can see other cheeses you can use above.
- To help get these Pinwheels out off the muffin tin, use a butter knife and just spin around the edges to loosen.
- You don’t necessarily have to use a muffin tin for this recipe, but we do because it holds everything together with minimal spreading and adds a crispness to it.
