This Hot Chocolate Mug Cake is just what it sounds like, it’s like sipping on a mug of hot cocoa while snacking on some chocolate cake.
The marshmallows inside the cake really add a nice ooey gooey touch, and it helps to make sure the cake does not dry out as it bakes in the microwave.
Top it all off with some of your favorite hot chocolate toppings and you have yourself a dessert that is perfect for those cold winter nights.
With all the chocolate, the cake has a nice rich and moist texture. It really is perfection. If you haven’t tried a mug cake, now is the time with this easy recipe.

HOW TO MAKE A HOT CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE, STEP BY STEP:
- In a medium-sized bowl, stir together the flour, hot chocolate mix, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt until combined.
- In a small bowl, stir together the milk, melted butter, and vanilla.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir together until combined well.
- Next, fold in the chocolate chips and half of the mini marshmallows.
- Spray 2 10-12 ounce microwave-safe mugs with non-stick cooking spray.
- Add 1/4th of the cake mix to the bottom of each of the mugs. Spread it out some and form a little indent/hole in the center.
- Split the remaining mini marshmallow between the two mugs and place them into the indents you made.
- Add another 1/4th of the batter on top of the marshmallows and smooth it out so the marshmallows are covered.
- Microwave for about 1 minute to 1 minute and 15 seconds until cooked through.
- Remove from the microwave and let cool slightly before topping with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, dehydrated marshmallows, or mini chocolate chips if desired.
CAN I MAKE JUST ONE?
Yes, you can just halve the ingredients and make just one mug. Additionally, you can double the ingredients and make 4 mug cakes if desired.
DO I HAVE TO ADD THE MARSHMALLOWS TO THE CENTER?
I highly suggest that you add the marshmallows, they really give it that hot chocolate flavor, but you can omit them if you want more of a solid cake.
MY CAKE IS OVERDONE, WHAT DID I DO WRONG?
You have to remember that every microwave cooks slightly different. The wattages are different and the power level or strength at which they cook is different.
Because of this, we try to give a cooking range. Usually you know if your microwave tends to need more or less time with things and can adjust accordingly.
I would start on the lower cooking end of time and check it for doneness, and then continue to heat in about 15 second increments until fully cooked.
HOW TO STORE:
I don’t suggest trying to keep leftovers as they don’t keep well. This is one of those recipes that you only make what you need and enjoy it right when you make it.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- You can halve this recipe if you just want to make one mug cake.
- Leftovers don’t keep well, so only make these when you’re ready to enjoy them.
- You can add other toppings to your cake if you’d like, sprinkles, regular marshmallows, hot fudge, etc.
- It’s totally normal for the cake to start to rise above the rim of the mug while it’s in the microwave cooking. Just make sure to use a 10-ounce mug, or one that’s larger so the cake doesn’t overflow out of the mug.
- The marshmallows in the center are optional, but highly recommended not just for flavor but for moistness.
Craving a chocolatey dessert for just you and another person? Then you need to make this delicious Hot Chocolate Mug Cake to keep you warm on those chilly winter nights.
