A delicious and easy single serving dessert this Brownie in a Mug is packed full of chocolate flavor, top off with some powdered sugar, strawberries and whipped cream and you have the perfect dessert.
I love mug cakes, mug brownies, pretty much any mug meal that you can imagine. I am a single serving dessert lover and this Brownie in a Mug is the perfect one for my needs.
If you are a chocolate lover then this recipe is the only one that you need! It is so delicious and extra chocolatey because it is filled with chocolate chips as well!
When that chocolate craving it hits, it hits hard and I need chocolate like immediately. Thankfully for this Brownie in a Mug I can pretty much have that in minutes.
That is one of the reason why I love mug desserts because they cook fast in the microwave and most of the time we have all the ingredients on hand. Also I’m super obsessed with brownies!
My son is addicted to making alllll the mug things, for Christmas we got him two books along on desserts and meals that he can make in mugs and he has been going crazy.
But this Brownie in a Mug has always been a family favorite because we all love chocolate, we all love brownies and we all love quick and easy desserts.
Some of my favorite brownie dessert recipes that we have on our website include Caramel Brownies, Nutella Brownies and Cheesecake Swirled Brownie Cake!
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- With minimal ingredients this literally whips up in a flash.
- You can double this recipe and use two mugs for more people.
- You can top with any of your favorite toppings or eat it as is!
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT BOTTOM):
Unsweetened cocoa powder
All-purpose flour
Brown sugar
Vanilla extract
Milk
Vegetable oil
Mini chocolate chips
Salt
Powdered sugar (optional)
Whipped cream (optional)
Fresh strawberries or raspberries (optional)
HOW TO MAKE A BROWNIE IN A MUG, STEP BY STEP:
- Whisk together the cocoa powder, flour, sugar, and salt in a mug with a fork.
- Add the vanilla extract, milk, oil, and mix until combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.
- Microwave on high for 1-2 minutes (time will vary based on your microwave). The brownie should be slightly gooey in the middle while the edges spring back when pressed.
- Allow the brownie to rest for about 4 minutes to cool down and set.
- Garnish with powdered sugar, whipped cream and fruit if desired!
WHAT SIZE MUG SHOULD I USE?
You can use anywhere from an 8oz to a 12 oz mug, I always say the bigger the better just in case you have too small of a mug and it spills over the top.
It is best to have some room after it is microwaved to add any additional toppings that you might like!
WHAT ARE OTHER MIX-INS I CAN ADD?
Some great mix-ins that we have tried include nuts, mini M&M’s, chopped up Oreos, mint chips, white chocolate chips, butterscotch chips and peanut butter chips.
Pretty much you can add whatever you like to at the same amount that you would for the amount it calls for the chocolate chips.
SOME OF MY OTHER FAVORITE MUG DESSERTS:
Trust me when I say that I love my mug desserts here are a few that we can’t get enough 0f-
- Snickerdoodle Mug Cake
- Coffee Cake in a Mug
- Bread Pudding in Mugs
- Mug Cheesecake
- Chocolate Chip Cookie in a Mug
- Rice Krispie Treat in a Mug
- Cinnamon Roll in a Mug
CAN I STORE THIS RECIPE?
Since this is a single serving dessert we do not recommend storage as it is supposed to be made in one sitting. So if you don’t plan on eating it right away I would wait to make it until you are.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Make sure you use unsweetened cocoa powder and not dutch process, you can use dark chocolate cocoa powder if you like the flavor.
- There are other mix-in’s that you can use instead of chocolate chips, see my notes above.
- Make sure your mug is between at least 8-12 oz, it is better to have more room at the top in case it spills over, I always like to use larger so I’m able to add the toppings.
- Top this with your favorite toppings such as powdered sugar, fruit, peanut butter, whipped cream, etc.
- You can double this recipe for more than one person.

I don’t have microwave and can I oven bake ?
Tornadough Alli
I have never made this in an oven so I’m not sure how it would work honestly. I’m sorry I couldn’t be of much help with that.
