If you are a chocolate lover then this recipe is the only one that you need! It is so delicious and extra chocolatey because it is filled with chocolate chips as well!
When that chocolate craving it hits, it hits hard, thankfully for this Brownie in a Mug will satisfy that sweet tooth in just a matter of minutes..
That is one of the reason why I love mug desserts is because they cook fast in the microwave and most of the time we have all the ingredients on hand. Also I’m super obsessed with brownies!

But this Brownie in a Mug has always been a family favorite because we all love chocolate, we all love brownies and we all love quick and easy desserts.

WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- With minimal ingredients, this is ready in minutes!
- Easily double or triple this recipe to make for more people.
- You can top with any of your favorite toppings or eat it as is!
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST):
Unsweetened cocoa powder
All-purpose flour
Brown sugar
Vanilla extract
Milkย
Vegetable oil
Mini chocolate chips
Salt
Powdered sugar, optional
Whipped cream, optional
Fresh strawberries or raspberries, optional
HOW TO MAKE A BROWNIE IN A MUG, STEP BY STEP:
- Whisk together the cocoa powder, flour, sugar, and salt in a mug with a fork.
- Add the vanilla extract, milk, oil, and mix until combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.
- Microwave on high for 1-2 minutes (time will vary based on your microwave). The brownie should be slightly gooey in the middle while the edges spring back when pressed.
- Allow the brownie to rest for about 4 minutes to cool down and set.
- Garnish with powdered sugar, whipped cream and fruit if desired!
WHAT SIZE MUG SHOULD I USE?
You can use anywhere from an 8 ounce to a 12 ounce mug, I always say the bigger the better just in case you have too small of a mug and it spills over the top.
It is best to have some room after it is microwaved to add any additional toppings that you might like!
CAN I ADD ANY MIX-INS?
Yes, Some great mix-ins that we have tried include:
- Nuts
- Mini M&M’s
- Chopped up Oreos
- Mint Chips
- White Chocolate Chips
- Butterscotch Chips
- Peanut Butter Chips.
- Toffee Bits
Pretty much you can add whatever you like to at the same amount that you would for the amount it calls for the chocolate chips.
WHAT KIND OF CHOCOLATE CHIPS SHOULD I USE?
We use mini chocolate chips for this recipe. You can use regular sized chocolate chips if you like, they will just be less dispersed throughout the brownie.
You can use semi-sweet, milk or dark chocolate – the flavor is really up to you. I personally like semi-sweet as it balances out the sweetness.
WHAT ELSE CAN I TOP THIS BROWNIE IN A MUG WITH?
You can really top this with what you like or just leave it plain. There is no right or wrong.
Some of our favorite toppings that we have tried or like to use include:
- Powdered Sugar
- Whipped Cream
- Chocolate Chips
- Ice Cream
- Caramel Sauce
- Peanut Butter
- Dollop of Cream Cheese Frosting
- Fruits
- Sprinkles
Top with whatever your heart desires, go all out or keep it simple!
HOW TO STORE?
Since this is a single serving dessert we do not recommend storage as it is supposed to be made in one sitting.
So if you don’t plan on eating it right away I would wait to make it until you are.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Make sure you use unsweetened cocoa powder and not dutch process, you can use dark chocolate cocoa powder if you like the flavor.
- There are other mix-in’s that you can use instead of chocolate chips, see my notes above.
- Make sure your mug is between at least 8-12 oz, it is better to have more room at the top in case it spills over, I always like to use larger so I’m able to add the toppings.
- Top this with your favorite toppings, see my ideas above.
- We do not recommend storing or freezing this recipe.
- Easily double or triple this recipe to serve more people.
- Regular chocolate chips can be used, you can also choose to use semi-sweet, milk, or dark chocolate.

I donโt have microwave and can I oven bake ?
Tornadough Alli
I have never made this in an oven so Iโm not sure how it would work honestly. Iโm sorry I couldnโt be of much help with that.
