HOW TO MAKE EGGNOG FRENCH TOAST, STEP BY STEP:
- In a medium-sized bowl add the eggnog, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sea salt and whisk together until fully combined.
- Place a large non-stick skillet over medium heat.
- Add 1 tablespoon of butter into the pan once it becomes hot. Next, dip a piece of the sliced bread into the eggnog mixture, making sure to soak both sides, then let any excess mixture drip off back into the bowl.
- Place the piece of soaked bread into the hot pan. You do not want to crowd your pan, you will need to cook in batches of about 2.
- Cook until they are golden brown on both sides, this should take about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Place on a baking tray while you cook the remaining pieces. If desired you can place the tray into a warm oven to keep them warm before serving.
- Add another tablespoon of butter before adding the next pieces of bread.
- To serve, add a dusting of powdered sugar and maple syrup if desired.
- Enjoy!
CAN I USE ANOTHER TYPE OF BREAD?
While we love the size and texture of the French Bread for this recipe as it is thicker, we used a loaf and sliced it into 1/2-1-inch slices.
It is a little different than your normal French Toast, you can use other breads if you’d like.
If you choose to go another route, I would suggest you use Texas Toast, sliced Brioche or sliced Challah. These will yield the best results, but you can use regular bread if you’d like, just be careful when flipping.
CAN I SUBSTITUTE THE SPICES?
I personally love the cinnamon and nutmeg together in this recipe, if you are not a nutmeg fan you can omit it and add more cinnamon to compensate.
If you are not a fan of either and want to go a more simple route that is just as tasty, you can use pumpkin pie spice for this as well.
WHAT OTHER TOPPINGS CAN I ADD?
We like to use regular syrup as it really pairs well with the eggnog flavor, but if you want to change things up try adding:
- Caramel sauce
- Vanilla sauce
- Powdered sugar glaze
- Rum glaze
- Whipped cream
HOW TO STORE:
Any leftover Eggnog French Toast should be stored in an airtight container, zip top bag, or covered with saran wrap tightly in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
If storing in the freezer, place them in a freezer safe container. Always make sure french toast is cooled completely before storing them in your preferred way.
Defrost in the refrigerator overnight and we prefer to reheat in the microwave until just warmed through.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- You can trade the toppings out, see some of my other suggestions shared above.
- French Toast can be frozen, see my tips above.
- You can double or even triple this recipe. If you want to do that, I suggest using a griddle or something like a Blackstone grill to get more done at once.
- You can use other bread types if you don’t have french bread, see above for other options.
- If you’re out of cinnamon and nutmeg, you can use pumpkin spice in its place.
