Quick and easy with minimal ingredients, this Homemade BBQ Sauce is a staple that you will want to keep on hand for all the things!
I love a good sauce, I love it even more if I can easily make it at home with just a few simple ingredients that we usually have on hand.
This Homemade BBQ Sauce is one that we have been making forever, the flavors are a little sweet and a little tangy, just the right combination.
We also love how this makes a nice large batch, so we can keep it on hand and use it for so many various things.
Sauces are my sweet spot and I may keep way too many on hand for my own good, but I just can’t help myself.
But when it comes to this Homemade BBQ Sauce, you really can’t go wrong because it is so so versatile.

WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- With minimal, on-hand ingredients this comes together in no time.
- It is SO versatile and goes great on or in so many things.
- It makes a larger batch so you have a bunch to use.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST):
Ketchup
Dark brown sugar
Apple cider vinegar
Honey
Yellow mustard
Black pepper
Hot sauce or red pepper flakes, optional
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE BBQ SAUCE, STEP BY STEP:
- Add all ingredients to a medium saucepan, whisk together, then heat over medium heat until boiling.
- Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes or until just starting to reduce and thicken, stirring occasionally. (Should be simmering, not splattering)
- Allow to cool slightly, then pour into 3 8-ounce containers.
- Use promptly or cover and refrigerate.
- To use, brush onto ribs, chicken, pork chops and more before baking, smoking, or grilling.
CAN I MAKE THIS A SMOKIER FLAVOR?
Yes, if you want to add a little smoke flavor to this Homemade BBQ Sauce you can absolutely do that.
Just add in a teaspoon of liquid smoke with the remaining ingredients and then cook per the directions.
IS THIS SPICY OR SWEET?
This has a sweet and tangy flavor, more on the sweet side I would say. But you can make it a little spicy if you prefer.
If you do want some spice, we have added the option to add hot sauce or red pepper flakes to give you that hint of spice on your tounge.
HOW MUCH DOES THIS RECIPE MAKE?
This recipe will make 3 8-ounce jars of sauce, so 24 ounces total. You can choose to split them up in the jars or just pour into one larger jar and use that way.
WHAT CAN I SERVE THIS SAUCE WITH, IN OR ON?

HOW TO STORE:
This can be stored covered or in an airtight container in the refrigerator where it will keep for up to 2 weeks.
You can also freeze this recipe, place in freezer safe containers and they will keep for up to 3 months.
To defrost, remove to the refrigerator until thawed – then serve!
