Do you love minimal ingredient, quick and easy meals or appetizers? Then you need to whip up my recipe for Ham Salad! Use it as a dip or on sandwiches!
I love Ham Salad. It is one of those recipes at least I know if you’re from the midwest you grew up on. It would always be at potlucks or parties and it was amazing.
As a kid it wasn’t the greatest because I knew all the stuff in there was “yucky” but when you get to be an adult you learn better and realize that it is so addictive.
We have been using this Ham Salad Recipe for many years and it is our go-to and we usually never stray. We all have that one recipe that we always keep the same, this is one of them for me.
I know people like various things in their ham salads and some people even use bologna! So you can absolutely customize this recipe to your liking.
This is just my base recipe that we have come to love, you can add or subtract what goes in it for sure, but try to keep the amounts of the mayo the same so it holds together. It makes a great appetizer or sandwich!
If we have leftover ham for any occasion or for any holidays this is what it usually becomes, or we just go buy a ham steak or a big chunk of ham to make this because we are craving it
Some of my other favorite ham recipes we have on our site include Scalloped Potatoes and Ham, Brown Sugar Pineapple Baked Ham and Ham and Cheese Sliders.

HOW TO MAKE HAM SALAD, STEP BY STEP:
- Place the diced ham, egg, celery, and scallions into a food processor.
- Pulse until the ingredients break up to your liking. I like to pulse until there is a mixture of larger and smaller chunks, but you can process the mixture as fine as you prefer.
- Place the ham mixture into a large bowl, set aside.
- In a small bowl, add the mayonnaise, mustard, pickle relish, and black pepper.
- Stir together until combined
- Pour the dressing on top and mix until coated. Taste and add more salt if desired.
- Serve on rolls as a dip or however you prefer.
WHAT IS HAM SALAD?
Ok think of Egg Salad, Chicken Salad and Tuna Salad. This is pretty much the same thing as those but with ham. It consists of a mayo or salad dressing (your choice) binder and various ingredients.
Ingredients that are mixed in can include, onions, relish, peppers, celery, herbs, eggs, etc. You can put in your favorite mixture that you do with those other types of salads.
Ham Salad is a very versatile recipe and can be switched up to peoples likings and flavor profiles, like I mentioned above this is how we make ours and always have.
But feel free to switch it up and add your favorite ingredients that you like. Everything is blended together in a food processor until you get the consistency that you like.
We like to not blend ours too much so it makes a paste, we like it having some texture and larger ham pieces to it so we can really get some bite and crunch.
HOW TO SERVE HAM SALAD:
So this recipe is pretty much used two different ways. You can use it as a dip/spread or on a sandwich. We use both! We love it both ways.
You can use anything to dip it with, crackers, bread, vegetables etc. We are keen on using club crackers when using it as a dip as it goes nicely together.
When we serve it as a sandwich it varies, we use slider buns, bread, croissants, pitas, etc. We really don’t hold back on what kind of sandwich we are making.
We pretty much use what we have on hand unless we are making it for something special then we buy special for what we are serving it for.
But feel free to serve it however you like, even in a lettuce wrap it would be amazing or a tortilla wrap as well. Like I said very versatile.
HOW TO STORE:
Ham Salad is best eaten the day that it is made, but if you have leftovers make sure that you store them in an airtight container and it should keep up to 3-4 days in the refrigerator.
I do not recommend freezing this recipe as mayo based recipes aren’t the best to freeze and don’t thaw well.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- You can use any kid of ham you have on hand, leftover ham, ham steak, etc.
- Add and subtract from this recipe to your liking.
- We also like to use sweet relish for a little sweetness so we swap that out for dill relish from time to time depending on our mood.
- This can be served as a dip/spread or as a sandwich.
- Blend this to your consistency liking, like I mentioned above we like it to not be too fine as we like the bigger chunks.
- You can double this recipe to serve to larger crowds.
