WHY IS IT CALLED QUICHE?
The word quiche comes from the German word for cake. History states that the original Quiche Lorraine was an open faced pie consisting of eggs, cream and bacon.
Over the years it has been adapted to different forms and cheese has been regularly added to quiche recipes.
WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A QUICHE AND A FRITTATA?
When you think of a quick and frittata you pretty much envision the same thing. They are both egg dishes that usually consist of savory fillings.
The difference between the two are that a frittata is crustless where as a quiche normally has a pie crust of some sort, but you can also make a crustless quiche as well.
This savory recipe is perfect for any day of the week, while we usually save these babies for the weekend when we know everyone is home and we will all be able to eat together.
There are just some dishes that I really feel bring a family together and this has always been one of them, since I was young my mom had always made them so it’s nostalgic.
DO YOU HAVE TO PRE-BAKE THE CRUST?
We don’t pre-bake our crust but you can absolutely but I wouldn’t bake all the way through. You can maybe bake half the time suggested for on the package.
We normally don’t bake it at all until the whole quiche goes in and we have never had any issues with soggy crust, but if you’re nervous about that then pre-bake.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- You can use homemade, frozen or refrigerated pie crust for this recipe.
- We use a deep dish for this so when we use refrigerated crust we roll it out slightly so it is longer and easier to flute.
- You do not have to sautรฉ your onions if you do not want to, they will soften up slightly when baking.
- You can easily. switch up the filling in this recipe to suit what you like we often make this Sausage version.
