Want rich, delicious, chocolatey goodness? This Death By Chocolate Cake is insanely delicious, chocolate cake, poked and pour with chocolate fudge and topped with a milk chocolate frosting!
If you know ANYTHING about me, it’s my love for chocolate, and cakes. Well technically any dessert really. But especially chocolate cake. Nothing can compare.
This Death By Chocolate cake is a take on my Triple Chocolate Cake but a little bigger, a little easier but just as addicting to say the least!
As much as I love making things from scratch, this cake is “semi-homemade” meaning that yes I did use a cake mix, but I did make the frosting from scratch, so that counts right?
But one thing that I do when I use a cake mix is doctor it up to make it moister and richer and just a little more sturdy because I’ve noticed, especially in poke cakes that the cakes fall apart unfortunately.
HOW TO DOCTOR UP A CAKE MIX
Forget the back of the box, you can disregard that for sure! If you really want to make a boxed cake just that much better follow these steps:
- Replace water in recipe with 1 1/4 cup milk.
- Replace oil with 1 cup melted butter.
- Add 4 eggs to the mix instead of the normal 1, 2 or 3.
These simple steps will result in delicious results with pretty much ANY boxed cake mid. Ta-da! This is literally the best, you can see how we used it in our Strawberry Banana Poke Cake!
This Death By Chocolate poke cake is a chocolate lovers dream. Seriously, if you are a chocolate lover than this cake is just what you’ve been searching for, trust me.
Some of my other favorite chocolate desserts include:
Triple chocolate cake mix, hot fudge sauce and a milk chocolate frosting. I mean its a triple threat. The milk chocolate frosting really makes this cake what it is and cuts through the richer chocolate from the cake and fudge.
HOW TO MAKE DEATH BY CHOCOLATE CAKE:
- Preheat oven to 350.
- Spray a 9″x13″ pan with non-stick cooking spray, set aside.
- In large bowl mix together cake mix, milk, butter and eggs until combined.
- Spread into prepared pan and bake for 35-40 minutes, let cool.
- Poke holes over top of cake and then heat fudge sauce in microwave until pourable.
- Pour into holes and spread around with spatula until soaked in, set aside.
- To make frosting, in a bowl add your chocolate chips and a splash of heavy cream and melt in microwave stirring every 30 seconds until smooth, remove and let cool.
- In large bowl beat your butter until smooth, add in your powdered sugar one cup at a time.
- Add in your cooled chocolate until mixed.
- Add in milk 1 Tbs at a time until desired consistency is reached.
Literally if you are wanting a cake that everyone will fall in love with it has to be this Death By Chocolate Cake. I know I keep saying it but I cannot get enough of it.
Now one slice per day is enough for me, while I would love to have more…my body just doesn’t agree with me and I don’t want to have to run on the treadmill any more than I already do, I’m sure some people could agree.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Use your favorite homemade chocolate cake recipe if you prefer a from scratch recipe instead.
- Add chocolate chips to the batter to give it some extra texture.
- Chill your cake slightly before serving, it sets up the frosting a little bit as this frosting is creamy.
- Sprinkle with mini chocolate chips instead of chocolate shavings.
- Make chocolate ganache by mixing together semi-sweet chocolate and heavy cream instead of using hot fudge sauce.
These are just some of the optional things you can do to change up this Death By Chocolate cake recipe! Let me know in the comments if you tried this cake or doctored it up in any way!
