Crispy, golden and absolutely easy these Beer Battered Onion rings are the perfect appetizer or side dish to your dinnertime meal! Quick, tasty and crunchy!
You all have to know by now that appetizers are my favorite things ever. We have stated multiple times throughout this whole cooking process that we could make meals out of them.
Usually appetizers are easy to make, and who isn’t a huge fan of finger food, dips, what have you anyways? In this house, it is a huge deal for us.
Some of our favorite appetizer recipes besides these Beer Battered Onion Rings that we make are these Italian Pinwheels, Baked Buffalo Wings and these Honey BBQ Crockpot Meatballs!
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Minimal ingredients combine to make a quick recipe that is simple to whip up.
- You can make as big batch or little, the batter goes a long way if you let it.
- Puffing up crispy and golden it creates a crunchy and flavorful breading you’ll love.
What I love about the batter of this recipe is that it looks like it won’t really do much but it puffs up so nicely in the oil and really gives a great balance between crunchy and tender at the same time.
HOW TO MAKE BEER BATTERED ONION RINGS, STEP BY STEP:
- In a bowl whisk together your beer and egg and set aside.
- In another bowl whisk together your flour, baking powder, salt, garlic powder and pepper.
- Add in your beer and egg mixture.
- Whisk this mixture until its smooth and no lumps remain.
- In a shallow bowl add your additional flour and dredge your sliced onions in the flour.
- Dunk your onion rings into your batter and deep fry in 350 degree F oil until golden brown, flipping a few times.
See how easy this recipe is? We like to use our deep fryer for this but you can also use a skillet (cast iron recommended) and pour some oil in it as well.
WHAT TYPE OF ONIONS ARE BEST FOR ONION RINGS?
While it all comes down to personal preference you can use either white or yellow onions.
Yellow onions are more pungent in flavor and have a stronger taste whereas white onions are sweeter, some of those that we like to use are Walla Walla and Vidalia.
WHAT TYPE OF BEER IS BEST FOR ONION RINGS?
Again, this all comes down to flavor preference. We prefer a lighter beer such as Busch, PBR, Mich, etc since it doesn’t really give that super heavy beer flavor but it is still there.
If you want something that has a lot of beer flavor then I would go with a dark beer such as a stout like Guinness.
Some people say that Beer Battered Onion Rings are a summer food, good for BBQ’s. I disagree. I think it’s a comfort food and I have it all year long.
Onion rings are a staple recipe, something offered at most bar and grills, and one of the top things that I order off a menu at any given time.
But no need for that when you now have your own no-fail Beer Battered Onion Ring Recipe right here waiting to be made!
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR MAKING BEER BATTERED ONION RINGS:
- Slice your onion rings as thick or thin as you like, the thicker the bigger and longer they need to cook, the thinner they will turn out more like shoe strings.
- You can use any beer (notated above) that you like depending on how much of a flavor and type of beer flavor that you want coming through.
- If you want a little kick to your onion rings, add a few squirts of hot sauce to your batter mix.
- Try to eat these right out of the fryer otherwise they will go soggy.

Thanks for stopping by, I love onion rings of any sorts but if they are battered in beer I’m even more apt to love them.
