Everybody can choose their sides and get their bellies full. These really are a great sandwich recipe and go great with a bunch of different sides so you can really pick and choose.

Unsalted butter
Grated parmesan
Garlic powder
Italian seasoning
Provolone cheese
Tavern ham
Genoa salami
Deli pepperoni
Pepperoncini peppers
HOW TO MAKE BAKED ITALIAN SUBS, STEP BY STEP:
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and slice your hoagie rolls in half lengthwise. Do not cut all the way through. Place them cut side open onto a sheet tray.
- Add the softened butter, parmesan, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning to a small bowl and mix to create a garlic butter.
- Stir until everything is well combined.
- Using a knife, spread the garlic butter over the exposed hoagie rolls evenly.
- Place the buttered rolls in the oven and bake them for 5 minutes or until they’re lightly toasted.
- Cut a piece of cheese in half and place it on the bottom part of the hoagie roll. Repeat with the other rolls.
- Add ham, salami, and pepperoni, all in top of the cheese- evenly distributed on all of the sandwiches.
- Add the sliced pepperoncini next. Cut another piece of cheese in half and place it on top of the meat. Repeat the layering of cheese and meat with the rest of the sandwiches.
- Close the top piece of bread on the sandwiches and place them into a 9×13 baking dish or one similar in size so all the sandwiches fit. Bake them for another 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted and the sandwiches are warmed through and bread is toasted. Serve immediately and enjoy.
WHAT OTHER MEAT CAN I USE?
This Italian Sub recipe is a great base recipe to work off of. But you can use your other favorite Italian meats like hard salami, mortadella, capicola, porchetta, prosciutto, or sopressata, etc.
WHAT OTHER CHEESE CAN I USE?
Instead of provolone cheese, you can use mozzarella or muenster cheese, or a combination to craft your perfect sub.
Really you can use any cheese that you like, but keeping on the italian theme that we like we really like using the cheese that is in the recipe, but feel free to use what you like.
CAN I ADD OTHER TOPPINGS?
If you want to add extra toppings after the subs come out of the oven you certainly can! Some delicious ideas to try are:
- Sliced tomatoes
- Shredded lettuce
- Onions
- Peppers
- Giardiniera
HOW TO STORE:
Leftover subs should be kept in the refrigerator after they have cooled down completely where they will keep for up to 3 days.
I like to store them wrapped up in aluminum foil. When you want to reheat them pop them in the oven until heated through. You do not want to heat too long or the bread gets too toasted.
I do not recommend trying to freeze these subs.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Don’t skip out on making the garlic butter. It adds so much extra flavor that you’ll really appreciate. But if you don’t want to make the garlic butter, you could use garlic bread in place of the hoagie rolls.
- Want add a little moisture to the sub? Try some Italian dressing, red wine vinegar with olive oil, or mayonnaise if needed.
- We love to serve this sub with plain potato chips or bbq chips to make a quick lunch but potato salad, cole slaw, or a side salad, would all be good options to enjoy alongside this sub.
- You can customize the subs however you like, there are more meat and cheese suggestions shared above.
- Other toppings can be added, again see above for suggestions.

Can these be made ahead of time and heated later?
Tornadough Alli
That should be fine, you donโt have to toast the inside of the buns if you donโt want to but you can do that ahead of time but they may not be toasted when you are ready to finish.
