WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- With a variety of easy to find ingredients, the flavors pair together well.
- You can make a larger batch in a punch bowl and serve in glasses with ice.
- The longer it sits the more apple flavor comes through!
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT BOTTOM):
Apples
Cinnamon sticks
Unfiltered apple cider
Black or regular spiced rum
Pinot noir (or your favorite dry red wine)
Pure maple syrup
Lemon wedge
Light brown sugar
HOW TO MAKE APPLE CIDER SANGRIA, STEP BY STEP:
- Fill a large pitcher with sliced apples and cinnamon sticks.
- Pour apple cider, rum, pinot noir, and maple syrup over the apples and cinnamon.
- Using a large spoon, stir the sangria in the pitcher until mixed.
- Refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight. The cinnamon flavor will really come through after sitting overnight. For me, the more cinnamon flavor, the better!
- Before serving, run a wedge of lemon around the rim of your glass and dip it into a shallow plate of light brown sugar.
- Allow a minute or so for the brown sugar to set-up on the rim.
- Re-stir the sangria to make sure all of the flavors are incorporated and pour into your rimmed glass, over ice.
- Garnish with sliced apples and/or cinnamon sticks.
WHAT IS APPLE CIDER?
Apple Cider is pretty much raw apple juice that has not undergone a filtration process, where apple juice has.
So usually when you see apple cider it is mainly considered “unfiltered” otherwise it would be labeled apple juice.
Jugs of apple cider are usually found in the refrigerator case in the produce section of your local grocer.
Apple cider is more readily available in the fall and winter months but I have been able to find it, even during the summer at my local grocery store.
WHAT KIND OF APPLES SHOULD I USE?
I used Gala and Red Delicious apples in this sangria. Granny Smith are another great option if you wanted to add a bit of tart into the mix.
You can really use any of your favorite apples for this recipe, the juicer the better for that more potent apple flavor.
CAN I USE A DIFFERENT RED WINE?
Sure! If youโd like to substitute another red wine, choose a dry red wine. Some examples would include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Tempranillo.
If your favorite red is a bit sweeter and youโd like to substitute that, just cut back a bit on the maple syrup. Or you can keep this really sweet, I would suggest testing flavor as you go.
DO I HAVE TO USE THE MAPLE SYRUP?
For this recipe yes, we have tested this time and time again with maple syrup and trying to substitute with other things to get our desired flavor.
We highly suggest using the maple syrup in this recipe. If you must leave it out you can, you can just substitute some more apple cider in it’s place.
HOW TO STORE:
This Apple Cider Sangria can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
It gets more potent flavor the longer that it sits, but the fruits will start to break down after that time.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- You can use a black or regular spiced rum in this recipe, we use Kraken Black Spiced Rum.
- We use a mix of apples in this recipe, you can choose to use just one type if you like, we use Gala and Red Delicious but Granny Smith also works well.
- You can make a larger batch to serve at a party just place in a punch bowl.
- Different red wines can be used, see my tips above.
- This needs to chill for a bit before serving so the flavors can marry, the longer it sits the better it gets.
- Remember to get apple cider and not apple juice.
