Easy, fun and flavorful these Walking Tacos are a delicious and quick meal to serve a crowd, have some fun on taco night or just because you want to switch it up!
I grew up eating Walking Tacos, they have always been one of my favorite things for as far back as I can remember. We used to have a taco bar in school and this is how they would serve them.
To me they never get old, you can switch up the toppings as much as you’d like and customize it all the time. We like to give options so we used regular Doritos then my kids favorite Cool Ranch.
Both are absolutely amazing, but you can also do these with Fritos as well, but Doritos is what I know and love the best so I have always stuck with that.
This recipe is fun for many different occasions either as a main or an appetizer and super easy. Picnics, graduations, birthday parties, baby showers, etc. You really cant go wrong with a Walking Taco recipe!

You really can’t go wrong with this recipe. I like to crush my chips up a bit in the bag so they aren’t so huge, I think that might be the normal thing to do.
But I’m not entirely sure, that is what I have always been doing and I like it that way because they your Walking Taco really get’s mixed together and you get all the goodness in each bite.
There really is no right or wrong way to make these, even with the toppings that I suggested above you can absolutely add some more or different ones to build to your liking.

WHY IS IT CALLED A WALKING TACO?
Walking Taco or or otherwise known as Taco in a Bag are not technically tacos, but are the Midwest name for the Texas dish called the Frito Pie.
A bag of Frito’s corn chips or in this case Doritos is opened and topped with various ingredients, such as cheese, beans, tomatoes, onions, ground beef, guacamole, and salsa.
The trend began in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the 1982 World’s Fair.
Little known history for you there as to why they are called that and why sometimes we make them with Fritos as well. But we have also seen these called Frito Pies.
Being from the Midwest we have always called them Walking Tacos and I will stick to that name. You can call them whatever you like!
HOW TO STORE:
I don’t recommend storing Walking Tacos once they are assembled, everything will get mushy and we don’t like mushy.
You can however store the toppings and unopened bags of chips, just place all your toppings back in the refrigerator until you decide to top them again.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- You can use your favorite chips for this recipe.
- Any topping that you like for regular tacos will work perfectly fine.
- You can use a large bag and make this into a salad if you’d like.
- These are great for may different occasions such as picnics, birthday parties, baby showers, etc.
If you want a fun and easy recipe that you can pretty much make whenever and for whatever then you need to make these Walking Tacos.
