Creamy, chocolatey and absolutely delicious this Homemade Chocolate Pudding recipe uses pantry staple ingredients and is the perfect recipe to satisfy that chocolate craving.
Pudding is king in this house. My kids always, always, always ask for pudding. We used to always buy the snack packs but figured that making your own is easier.
So we have been making homemade pudding ever since. We have a Homemade Coconut Pudding we love as well as a Vanilla one that we use in our Southern Banana Pudding recipe we make.
If you only know how easy it is to make Homemade Chocolate Pudding, you probably would have made it years ago. My mom would make it when I was a kid for dessert.
But when I was a kid I was also picky and wanted so many variety of flavors and around that time they liked to experiment so I always had her buy them for me, not anymore!
You can easily make any flavor pudding you want using different extracts etc. This is our basic vanilla pudding recipe with cocoa added to make it Chocolate Pudding.
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Easy pantry ingredients are used so it makes it a simple recipe to whip up.
- You can easily double this recipe (we do) to serve a crowd.
- This makes a nice thick yet creamy pudding that is perfect in texture.
We like to send the kids to school with little containers of this as we like to make their school lunches and they have always loved it. There is something about chocolate kids enjoy.
I was more of a vanilla girl growing up but the chocolate has grown on me over the years, but don’t even get me started on the coconut, that is to die for.
One I’m not a fan of is butterscotch, but that’s one of those flavors that I really haven’t been too keen on, but not saying I won’t make it!
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE CHOCOLATE PUDDING, STEP BY STEP:
- In medium saucepan add in the milk, sugar, cornstarch, cocoa powder, salt, egg and egg yolk, whisk together.
- Continuously whisk over medium high heat until thick and bubbly, this could take about 10-15 minutes.
- Remove from heat and whisk in the butter, and vanilla extract.
- Once combined place Saran Wrap over the top of pudding pressing down on top of pudding itself so it doesnโt create a film and place in refrigerator until chilled.
See how easy it is to make Chocolate Pudding? Literally, it takes minimal time and effort and that is absolutely something that we love around here and I’m sure you appreciate.
We use regular unsweetened cocoa powder in this recipe, but if you are a dark chocolate fan you can switch it to dark chocolate cocoa powder instead.
HOW TO STORE:
Normally you would see regular store bought puddings stored at room temperature, but those are sealed so it is safe to keep them at room temperature.
This pudding is best stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, it’s best to eat within 3 days. Sometimes pudding will separate and get a little more liquidy the longer it sits.
CAN PUDDING BE FROZEN?
Yes absolutely this can be frozen. You can even freeze them into molds like pudding pops if you like. Just cook and cool like directed and then put in a freezer container and store up to 3 months.
When it comes to this easy Homemade Chocolate Pudding Recipe, you really can’t beat it. The chocolate flavor is there, not overpowering and it is creamy and delicious.
This is one of the most requested snack recipes in our ouse, so we always have some pudding on hand one week or the other!
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Why donโt we temper our egg mixture? There is no rhyme or reason behind this, we arenโt adding in eggs to a hot liquid, we are cooking them all together at the same temperature keeping them from cooking and just used as a thickener.
- If you are a dark chocolate fan, you can add dark cocoa powder rather than regular unsweetened.
- Placing Saran Wrap over your pudding helps prevent a film from forming over the top of your pudding mixture.
- This may take up to 10-15 minutes to fully thicken up, do not give up!
- This can be frozen, see the notes above for instructions on that.
If you want a fun and tasty treat, you have to whip up this Homemade Chocolate Pudding, it’s super simple, everyone seems to love it and you’ll be coming back for more.
