Easy, tasty and delicious these Hoe Cakes are a fun side dish to go with your dinner time meal, a snack to nosh on or breakfast to devour.
If you’ve never tried Hoe Cakes, now is the time. They are a super easy to whip together dish that are great for any kind of meal.
We love these for breakfast, but we aren’t against them for lunch or dinner either. They go great as a side dish to pretty much any meal.
My mom used to live in Mississippi when I was born and this is where she first learned to make Hoe Cakes, and the knowledge then trickled down to me.
We love southern inspired food and some of our favorites are Red Beans and Rice, Southern Banana Pudding and Chicken and Sausage Gumbo.
And that is how my love of Hoe Cakes were born, and they are so easy and flavorful that I just can’t resist these little pancake like treats.
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- With limited ingredients these cook up nice and fluffy in about 15 minutes.
- You can add some extras in there to give it a little bit of flavor such as cheese and bacon.
- This recipe can easily be doubled to make more, because who doesn’t want to anyways!
WHAT ARE HOE CAKES?
Hoe cakes AKA Johnny Cakes are pretty much little pancakes that are essentially mini cornbread. They are made with a mixture of cornmeal and self rising flour.
The name comes from then being cooked in a pan known as a “how” but also they have been linked to rumors of them being cooked on blades of garden hoes.
HOW TO MAKE HOE CAKES, STEP BY STEP:
- In bowl add your cornmeal and self rising flour and whisk together until blended.
- Next add in your buttermilk, oil, water, sugar and eggs.
- Whisk this together until combined, it’s ok if there are some lumps.
- Add some oil into the bottom of a pan and add your batter about 3 Tbs’s at a time and fry on both sides until golden, remove and set aside.
This pretty much is a fool-proof recipe. If you are an expert pancake maker, then this recipe is just the one you need. They pretty much are silver dollar pancakes, but cornbread like form.
WHAT ARE SOME VARIATIONS OF HOE CAKES?
So to switch it up and make them more savory, we often add some cheddar cheese and bacon into the batter, as pictured below.
We also love to drizzle these with allllll the syrup! That is one of the best parts. Warm syrup on a hoe cake recipe is the best.
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR MAKING HOE CAKES:
- Make them smaller, they are meant to be eaten in smaller portions, not like large sized pancakes.
- They are normally made with buttermilk, but you can also add regular milk if you don’t have any buttermilk.
- Also if you want to make your own buttermilk, you can make homemade by mixing 1 cup of milk with 1 Tbs white vinegar or lemon juice.
- Add in other mix in’s if you like, like stated above we like to add cheddar and bacon.
- Drizzle with all the syrup, hoe cakes are supposed to have syrup!
- Make sure you drain these well on paper towels before serving, like any fried food there will be residual grease leftover.
If you want a delicious and easy breakfast, dinner or lunchtime recipe…or even a late night snack then Hoe Cakes are absolutely the way to go!

Love your pictures! As a person raised in the Deep South (Florida/Alabama Line) I can say this IS the โcorrectโ way to eat Hoecakes. I generally eat them after my meat and vegetables. Loaded with syrup and real butter. Not healthy, but hey… all things in moderation, even moderation. ๐

These look tasty! I have been cooking with corn flour and corn meal a lot lately, as an easy and tasty gluten-free alternative. I am excited to make these.
Thanks for linking up to This is How We Roll linky party!

Yum! Now you have me feeling like I need a southern coastal vacation too! I have a feeling vacations like that will be a lot more fun in a few years when Jax is a little older though.

We haven’t vacationed with our kids yet. A trip like that would probably bankrupt us! I would love to take them in the near future for sure.
