Ok hear me out, some of the most easy of recipes are some of the most tasty ones. Especially when then can go with about anything.
This Grilled Halloumi is one of my favorite things ever. I order this whenever I can when I’m out, but making it at home is what I love to do most.
I first had this when I was in Portugal and I have never turned back. It makes a great appetizer or side dish to pretty much all the things.
With having really minimal and super easy ingredients, you cannot go wrong when making this, and it will get devoured.
One secret I have with this is serve it with some red pepper jelly, that is how I had it for the first time and oh, chef’s kiss so far. Sitting in that restaurant looking over the Atlantic Ocean and enjoying a simple dish.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST):
Halloumi cheese
Olive oil
Fresh basil
Lemon slices for serving, optional
Pita bread for serving, optional
HOW TO MAKE GRILLED HALLOUMI, STEP BY STEP:
- Preheat grill to about 375 degrees F.
- Slice halloumi brick into 8 equal pieces, about ยฝ inch thick, then pat dry with paper towels.
- Brush both sides of each slice generously with olive oil.
- Place cheese slices into heated grill.
- Grill for 2-3 minutes per side or until browning grill marks appear, careful not to overcook.
- Top with torn basil and serve warm with lemon slices and olive oil.
WHAT DO I SERVE WITH GRILLED HALLOUMI?
This is really such a versatile recipe that goes great with so many things. We have some good options that we like to serve it with.
Serve with grilled pita bread and hummus, grilled or fresh tomatoes, roasted or grilled red peppers. As another option, you can serve this over a salad.
Otherwise it goes great as a side with any meats, sandwiches and more. Just grill it up and you will quickly see.
WHERE CAN I FIND HALLOUMI CHEESE?
You can easily find it at your local grocer, we found ours at Walmart. They have a great selection of cheese.
You don’t have to go to a specialty store to find this. If worse comes to worse you can order from Amazon as they will package it safe for shipping.
WHAT IS THE TEXTURE AND TASTE OF HALLOUMI CHEESE?
The texture is similar to mozzarella or thicker feta, but it has a more strong, salty flavor from the brine that it is preserved in.
WON’T THIS MELT ON THE GRILL?
No, this cheese has a high melting point which makes if perfect for grilling. That is why you see it advertised a lot as grilled.
HOW TO STORE:
This can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container where it will keep for up to 4 days.
To reheat just place back onto the grill until warmed through again.
We do not recommend freezing this recipe.
