Cheesy, meaty and a fun appetizer, this Sloppy Joe Dip is great for game days, parties or holidays!
If you love sloppy joes, then you will fall in love with this Sloppy Joe Dip! I can’t be the only person that takes spoonfuls of their sloppy joes and justs eats it?
If you know one thing about me, then you know I absolutely looooove appetizers, and this dip is high on the list of my favorites.
With minimal ingredients, but oh so flavorful, this is done from start to finish in about 30 minutes!
Serve with your favorite dippers and trust me, you will not have any leftover when you are done.
This is one of those appetizers that go quickly, so go ahead and make a double batch – it’s most likely worth it!
We love this all year long and we serve it for dinner, parties, potlucks, game days, etc. There is no occasion not to make this Sloppy Joe Dip.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST):
Ground beef
Yellow onion
Bell pepper (any color)
Garlic
Ketchup
Brown sugar
Worcestershire sauce
Mustard powder
Salt and pepper
Cheddar cheese
Green onions, optional
HOW TO MAKE SLOPPY JOE DIP, STEP BY STEP:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Brown ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat, then drain grease.
- Add onion, pepper, and garlic and heat for an additional 5 minutes or until onions are translucent.
- Add ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, salt, and pepper, and mix until combined and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Reduce heat and simmer for 8-9 minutes.
- Mix half of shredded cheese into sloppy joe mixture.
- Spread into 9-inch cast iron skillet or and 8×8-inch baking dish.
- Top with remaining shredded cheese.
- Bake in preheated oven for 18-19 minutes or until bubbly and cheese is beginning to brown.
- Allow to cool slightly, top with optional green onion slices if desired, and serve.
CAN I USE CANNED SLOPPY JOE SAUCE FOR THIS RECIPE?
If you do not want to make your own sauce (which I highly recommend) then yes, you can use a canned sauce for this recipe.
You will want to use 1.5 15 ounce cans of store bought sloppy joe sauce and you will skip steps 2-5 in the directions.
DO I HAVE TO USE THE PEPPER AND ONION?
If you are not a pepper and onion fan, you can absolutely leave them out. We feel that it gives this great flavor and texture.
We also realize not everyone shares in our taste, so you can leave them out and it still taste great!
WHAT CAN I USE AS DIPPERS?
This is the fun part, you can use whatever you like to scoop up this Sloppy Joe Dip. Some of our favorites include:
- Sliced Baguette
- Scoop Chips
- Tortilla Chips
- Ruffles
- Diced French Bread
- Pretzels
- Pita Chips
If you can use it to scoop, then you can use it. Just make sure that you love it though!
CAN I USE ANOTHER MEAT?
Yes, while there are different meats used in regular sloppy joes you can use that in this recipe as well.
Use ground turkey, ground chicken or ground pork! All of them will taste great.
HOW TO STORE:
This can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container where it will keep for up to 4 days.
You can also freeze this dip, place in a freezer container and it will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.
To defrost, remove from the freezer and into the refrigerator overnight or until thawed.
To reheat, place back in oven until heated through or place in the microwave until heated through.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- You can use store bought sloppy joe sauce if you want, see above on how to do that.
- Switch up your cheese, colby jack, monterey jack, etc.
- Make sure you use freshly shredded cheese, it melts the best.
- You can leave out the onion and pepper if you are not a fan.
- This can be frozen, see above on how to do that.
- Easily double this recipe and put in a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Use your favorite dippers to scoop up this dip, see some ideas above.
- Swap the ground beef out for ground chicken, turkey or pork.
