Simmered low and slow this Easy Homemade Spaghetti Sauce is the perfect one pot sauce for all your pasta needs and cravings!
So I had a urgent spaghetti sauce craving this week! Like you have no idea how bad I was craving it. I’m not pregnant or anything so I don’t have an excuse to justify the out of no where urge to have it, but I knew I wasn’t going to be satisfied until I got it so I whipped up a batch of this Easy Homemade Spaghetti Sauce and I was in heaven.
So I like to make things as homemade as I can around here. Sometimes things are from jars, or frozen and what not, but if I had the choice I would always make homemade.
Now some of you might not consider this homemade because it’s using canned tomatoes and sauce. Well its as close to homemade as you’ll get for spaghetti sauce from this house. We have a garden, it has tomatoes, but we don’t have enough to make this nor do I have the time.
So I hope you all don’t hate me for calling this homemade…because I think it is. Just like cakes are homemade when they use purchased flour or sugar…obviously I’m not out milling my own flour or growing my own sugar, so this is considered homemade to me and trust me when I say..you’ll love it! Even my non sauce loving kids devoured this stuff and it makes a TON!
Obviously if you’re just cooking for 1 or 2 you probably want to cut this in half, otherwise it is great for freezing! I mean it’s quick and easy to defrost when you have a spaghetti hankering and you don’t want to whip up another batch from scratch or you don’t have a jar of sauce laying around.
We had a bunch left over so we decided to freeze it for another time. My kids love spaghetti so it will always come in handy.
HOW DO YOU MAKE HOMEMADE SPAGHETTI SAUCE?
So when I think of spaghetti sauce I always think of so many ingredients! Well this Easy Homemade Spaghetti Sauce doesn’t have a massive amount! And it’s pretty much just things you have lying around in your cabinet in the first place, I mean who doesn’t love recipes like that? They are my fave, when you literally already have everything on hand and can just whip it up!
To make this sauce you pretty much just brown your meats and then add everything into the pot and let all the flavors just marry together.
The kicker with this sauce is that I like to simmer it on low for about 3-4 hours. Now if you don’t have the time to do that, no worries, you can just simmer it for about an hour. Or throw it into your crock on low for 3-4 hours and you’ll have all the married flavors all together! It really thickens the sauce and makes it really rich and flavorful, so I recommend if you have a few day to do the low and slow simmering, it really pays off!
This Homemade Spaghetti Sauce is perfect on pretty much anything. It doesn’t just have to be spaghetti! Craving lasagna, here ya go! Baked ziti, heck yes!! Stuffed shells, it’s there to serve your needs!
It’s really a free for all, multi purpose sauce that goes good with all the pasta! And if you ever feel like it, it’s good on buns by it self as well…call it an Italian Sloppy Joe!
Serve this up with some of your favorite garlic bread or salads and you have yourself the perfect weeknight meal that the whole family enjoys!
Easy Homemade Spaghetti Sauce
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 lb Italian sausage
- 1 onion diced
- 4 cloves garlic minced
- 2 14.5 oz cans petite diced tomatoes
- 2 6 oz cans tomato paste
- 1 15 oz cans tomato sauce
- 2 cups water
- 1 Tbs dried basil
- 2 tsp dried parsley
- 1 Tbs sugar
- 1 Tbs brown sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
- Dash pepper
- 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
- n large dutch oven or stock pot, brown your ground beef and Italian sausage together until no longer pink.
- Add in your onions until they are soft and translucent.
- Add in remaining ingredients and stir until blended and bring to a boil then reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for about 3-4 hours to let flavors marry and sauce to thicken.
- Freeze leftovers.
