A classic cocktail this Bloody Mary Mix recipe is the perfect starter to one of your all time favorite drinks. Full of tomato juice, citrus and with a little bit of heat, this recipe is super easy and blends up quick.
Bloody Mary’s have to be one of my favorite things ever. I’m a huge tomato juice fan and regularly just buy the V8 Bold and Spicy and drink it straight up.
Now this is something I can also do with Bloody Mary Mix. I know it may sound weird, but I don’t even have to add in anything to enjoy it, the flavor alone is something I love. But we just love drinks around here!
We’ve gone through a lot of taste testing over the years on different Bloody Mary mixes to really find the flavor that we like, then we created our own recipe based off of that.
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- This Bloody Mary mix whips up in minutes, can be served right away, or chilled to let the flavors intensify.
- Minimal on hand ingredients make this recipe super easy.
- You can easily make this recipe more or less spicy to fit your flavor palette, we error on the side of spicy but this is a pretty mild recipe, with a little bit of heat.
We aren’t opposed to buying things bottled or canned and eating or drinking those, but we have over the years created lots of our favorite recipes from the store at home.
This Bloody Mary Mix being one of them. It makes a large manageable batch, not super huge, but enough to fill a pitcher and make a bunch of drinks, and it keeps well.
There is something though that makes you feel a little better about yourself when you can make something from scratch rather than have to buy it from the store, at least it does for me.
HOW TO MAKE BLOODY MARY MIX, STEP BY STEP:
This recipe is super simple and you add everything in all at once. So in a large pitcher add your tomato juice, lemon and lime juice and Worcestershire sauce (Photos 1 & 2).
Next add in your horseradish, hot pepper sauce (like tobasco), salt, pepper and celery seed and mix together with spatula or a long cocktail mixing spoon (Photos 3-6).
Now this is the part where you can refrigerate it for a few hour to intensify the flavors, we have done it both ways and we don’t prefer one way or another.
HOW TO SERVE BLOODY MARY MIX:
To serve as fully prepared Bloody Mary’s you will put some ice in a glass, pour your desired amount of Bloody Mary mix over the ice and serve usually with about 1.5-2oz vodka.
If you aren’t a drinker, we like to serve it with a little club soda, this is my preferred way of drinking the mix if I’m not drinking it just plain in a glass with some ice.
HOW TO DRESS UP BLOODY MARY’S:
This is where you can really really get creative with your Bloody Mary recipes! I have seen some out of this world cocktails, but when people serve Bloody Mary’s they usually go all out.
Now we kept it simple with a horseradish pickle, celery, green olives and a lemon slice. But here are some other fun additions that you can use:
- Bacon
- Beef sticks
- Skewered cheese squares
- Pepperocinis
- Pickled asparagus
- Shrimp
- Chicken wings
- Mini grilled cheese
- Mini burgers
There are seriously so many different ways to serve Bloody Mary’s that it isn’t even funny! Like I said, we like to keep it as simple as possible, but still add a little bit of flair to it.
You can also line the rim with some lime juice and roll it in salt or a salt and pepper mixture if you like as well!
Some of my other favorite cocktails include Whiskey Cherry Coke Smash, Blue Hawaiian and this Lemon Drop Cocktail!
This is really a year round drink, you don’t have to be hot or cold to enjoy this Bloody Mary Mix recipe at all! It is one of those that you pretty much find served at all bars year round.
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR MAKING BLOODY MARY MIX:
- We recommend using good quality tomato juice, since the majority of the drink consists of that, the flavor of the tomato juice counts!
- This Bloody Mary Mix should last about a week chilled in the refrigerator, usually it doesn’t last that long for us since we drink it too fast!
- You can add more or less of the pepper sauce and horseradish for you spice level. Just taste as you go and start with smaller amounts and build your way up until you find a ratio that you enjoy.
- Chilling the mix a few hours intensifies the flavor, but it is also ready to serve right away over ice, so it’s personal preference on chilling or not.
- Add whatever crazy garnishes you like, the more fun the better, this is one of those drink recipes that people really have fun with!
