WHAT IS A PUDDING CAKE?
A pudding cake is essentially exactly what the name says, it’s a pudding and a cake in one. While baking the cake makes it’s own sauce or “pudding” that goes to the bottom while the cake portion rises.
It creates a moist pudding sauce on the bottom while the top is a cover of a cake so its cake on top and pudding on bottom, two desserts in one.
Doesn’t this photo just make you want to lick the whole spoon! You see how it is a nice most cake but it has the gooiness of the pudding mixed in?
Literally this recipe is the best of both worlds. It sets up really nicely and you can choose depending on how long you bake it if you want it to be more pudding or cake like.
We like to have the more pudding like in ours so we bake for the recommended time for a more pudding consistency but I have included both baking times in the directions depending on what outcome you like.
My kids like to call this “magic cake” because it essentially bakes and the top becomes the bottom. Some other desserts that are like that include:
I have actually tired all three of those desserts and am obsessed with them all. They really are right when they say that baking is a science!
HOW TO STORE:
This cake can be stored in the refrigerator either in the baking pan or in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days.
You can serve this warmed or cool, to heat just place a portion of the cake in a microwave safe bowl and heat in microwave for a few seconds until warmed through.
I do not recommend freezing this cake as once it thaws the pudding portion tends to like to separate and you will have an overly wet cake.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- You can bake this for two different times to either get a more pudding like cake or a more cake like cake, see below on times.
- This is best if let cooled for a bit so the pudding bottom has time to set up a little bit.
- We like to use coffee granules in our sauce as coffee brings out the flavor of chocolate.
- Make sure that your water is boiling, that is essential to this recipe.
- DO NOT mix the sauce and the cake together, that is important for this to turn out.
If you love two desserts in one then you have to give my Chocolate Pudding Cake a try, once you try it you will never go back!
