Tater Tot Hotdish

Ok you guys…you know I’m from Minnesota. And here…the word casserole is foreign to us. I mean I don’t use it at all. It sounds so weird coming out of my mouth! Hotdish is our term for “casserole” around these here parts and I know some people will look at me with confusion.

Now anything we throw together in a dish we pretty much love. We can’t get enough of these easy dinnertime ideas. With 4 kids in tow casseroles or hot dishes are some of our favorite weeknight meals and happen more often than not.

The term hotdish actually means a type of “casserole” that usually contains a starch, a meat, a vegetable and canned soup. Now that can sound a little bland to some but trust me when you dig your fork into this hot mess you’ll fall in love.

All us Minnesotans probably make our Tater Tot Hotdish a little different because there are various methods used, your neighbor can have a different tater tot hotdish recipe than the one that your grandma handed down to you, it literally is so different.

Is it just me or when anyone else hears the word tater tot your mind automatically goes to Napoleon Dynamite? If you haven’t seen that film then go watch and then you’ll understand what I’m saying.

My husband always makes fun of me because I put my tots in such intricate lines. He’s the type of person who will just toss the tater tots on top and call it good. He’s not as much about the presentation as he is about the flavor,  where I’m equal on both.

This dish isn’t made to necessarily look pretty but when I’m able to layer the tots on top just right it makes me make an “ugly” dish just a little bit more classy.

This Tater Tot Hotdish recipe is something that is usually brough to potlucks. I swear I’ve never been to a potluck that hasn’t had this dish at it, and I’ve been to many potlucks. I get why though, it’s always a favorite and it is so easy to throw together.

My mom makes this corn, potato and beef hotdish that I also absolutely love that is similar to this, but seriously amazing. I’m going to have to whip that one up in the near future here and see what your opinions are on that!

  1. So I’ve learned over the years that EVERYONE makes this Hotdish/ Casserole pretty much the same and by that I mean with cream of mushroom soup well I love to cook and I love tater tot hotdish but instead of only using cream of mushroom soup I use cheddar cheese soup and because I have a big family I use both cream of mushroom and cheddar cheese soup mix all the contents together and instead of tater tots I use the crispy crowns and I add cheese to the top before putting the crispy crowns on now also after this hot dishes done we put a ginormous dollop of top the tater honor serving

  2. i landed on your site for this recipe after being introduced to hotdish. This is unbelievably good. Thank you for sharing.

  3. Tater tot hot dish one of my favorite go to comfort foods. I switch mine up a bit to two styles, one similar to this I omit the green beans as I’m not a fan (though if hubby is home I’ll leave them in!) and I switch out cream of mushroom to cream of celery. The second version after cooking up the hamburger I’ll add packet of taco seasoning then I’ll use Campbell’s nacho cheese soup to replace mushroom soup. I wil then add in some Mexican corn top with shredded taco blend cheese and the the tots. Then when serving I’ll have some shredded lettuce with cut up tomato you could also add olives, avocado or anything that you like on tacos and a dollop of sour cream.

  4. Great recipe. I’ve added variations to it. I include some cheese, some tater tots, and all of the beef right into the bowl mixture. I’ve also substituted a pack of peas and carrots instead of the green bean. I’ve also used chunks of chicken instead of the beef. It’s fun to try different things.

  5. I love this hotdish. I use hamburger, a bag of frozen mixed vegetables, cream of celery soup, cheddar cheese, crown or mini tater tots and sprinkle the top of tots with lawyer salt!

  6. This tater tots hotdish sound delicious and I will be making this in the next few days, I was also thinking of some variations, instead of ground beef use shredded chicken, cream of chicken soup, peas and carrots, and continue the recipe as written, you could also use shredded pork roast, your choice of soup, and vegetables, this recipe has endless variations just use your imagination, thank you for a great recipe, and giving me some more new ideas for diner
