An easy family favorite that takes minimal time and effort this Tater Tot Hotdish is a classic Midwest dish that you can’t help but fall in love with. Super comforting and feeds a crowd! The perfect potluck meal.
If there was one meal that I grew up eating more than anything, it would be Tater Tot Hotdish! I’m a born and breed Minnesotan and this is just something we know and love.
This recipe is super simple and combines a lot of great amazing flavors into one dish. Also know to some as a casserole, here in the midwest we call it a hotdish. One of the best main dishes around!
WHY DOES THIS RECIPE WORK?
- Minimal and readily available ingredients help make this dish super easy to whip up on busy weeknights.
- Besides browning the ground beef, everything you need is mixed-up in one bowl then layered into a baking dish.
- The layers of the different flavors all combine with each and every bite, making it absolutely 100% delicious.
HOW TO MAKE TATER TOT HOTDISH, STEP BY STEP:
- In bowl mix together soups, green beans, corn, milk and seasonings until combined, set aside.
- Spray a 9×13″ baking dish with non-stick cooking spray and layer your cooked ground beef on the bottom and spread to cover.
- Next pour your vegetable soup mixture over the top and spread over to cover the ground beef.
- Sprinkle your shredded cheddar cheese over the top of your soup mixture so it covered it evenly.
- Layer your tater tots in a single row on top of your cheese layer and bake in oven at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Remove from oven and let cool slightly to thicken up, then serve.
Now tell me that you cant get much more simple than that! There are so many different variations of this classic hotdish, we even have a Taco Tater Tot Hotdish on our site that is super good!
There are different ways that people make this classic dish, for example my father-in-law omits the shredded cheese and subs one of the can of soups for cheddar cheese soup.
We do like to keep thinks cheesy around here, because everything is better with cheese, amiright?
You could also substitute some of the vegetables if you like and even use frozen thawed vegetables in this Tater Tot Hotdish recipe as well.
CAN YOU FREEZE TATER TOT HOTDISH?
Absolutely! This is one of the best things about this dish, you just prepare according to directions and before baking you wrap it in plastic wrap then foil and place in the freezer.
This should last in the freezer for about 4 months, so it’s perfect to have on hand for new parents, for a quick meal to have when you run out of ideas, etc.
HOW TO REHEAT FROZEN TATER TOT HOTDISH:
Simply remove from the freezer and unwrap, preheat your oven to 350 and bake for about 50-60 minutes, you’ll want a little more time since everything has been frozen.
To crisp up the tots, you can turn on the broiler for a minute or two to get them nice and golden.
Since we really like the concept of hotdishes or “casseroles” as many of you fold call them, for an easy weeknight dinner, some of my other favorite include: Chicken Spaghetti Casserole, Amish Yumasetti Casserole and this Chicken Divan Casserole.
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR MAKING TATER TOT HOTDISH:
- You can substitute canned vegetables for fresh or frozen (thawed) in this recipe.
- If you cant find tater tots, you can also use tater crowns, or even sometimes hash browns.
- To get those tater tots nice and golden, place under the broiler for a few minutes before taking out of the oven.
- Let cool slightly before serving so the soup mixture can thicken up slightly.
If you want that simple weeknight dinner that is a no brainer, then you need to try this Tater Tot Hotdish, super deliciously, super easy and everyone loves it!

I love this hotdish. I use hamburger, a bag of frozen mixed vegetables, cream of celery soup, cheddar cheese, crown or mini tater tots and sprinkle the top of tots with lawyer salt!

Great recipe. I’ve added variations to it. I include some cheese, some tater tots, and all of the beef right into the bowl mixture. I’ve also substituted a pack of peas and carrots instead of the green bean. I’ve also used chunks of chicken instead of the beef. It’s fun to try different things.

Tater tot hot dish one of my favorite go to comfort foods. I switch mine up a bit to two styles, one similar to this I omit the green beans as Iโm not a fan (though if hubby is home Iโll leave them in!) and I switch out cream of mushroom to cream of celery. The second version after cooking up the hamburger Iโll add packet of taco seasoning then Iโll use Campbellโs nacho cheese soup to replace mushroom soup. I wil then add in some Mexican corn top with shredded taco blend cheese and the the tots. Then when serving Iโll have some shredded lettuce with cut up tomato you could also add olives, avocado or anything that you like on tacos and a dollop of sour cream.

So I’ve learned over the years that EVERYONE makes this Hotdish/ Casserole pretty much the same and by that I mean with cream of mushroom soup well I love to cook and I love tater tot hotdish but instead of only using cream of mushroom soup I use cheddar cheese soup and because I have a big family I use both cream of mushroom and cheddar cheese soup mix all the contents together and instead of tater tots I use the crispy crowns and I add cheese to the top before putting the crispy crowns on now also after this hot dishes done we put a ginormous dollop of top the tater honor serving
