WHAT IS AN IRISH COFFEE RECIPE?
Irish Coffee is a drink consisting of freshly brewed hot coffee, Irish whiskey, and sugars, stirred and topped with cream. The coffee is drunk through the cream for can all be mixed together.
HOW TO MAKE AN IRISH COFFEE RECIPE, STEP BY STEP:
- Add hot water to two large coffee mugs. Let it sit while you brew your coffee.
- Pour the hot water out. Add 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon of brown sugar to each mug.
- Evenly pour the hot brewed coffee into the mugs.
- Stir to combine and melt the sugars.
- Add 1 ounce of whiskey to each mug. Stir to combine.
- In bowl add your whipped cream and beat or whisk until soft peaks form.
- Top with soft whipped cream. Add chocolate shaving on top for garnish, optional.
See how easy this Irish Coffee is? I mean you really cant get much more easy than this! This is one of my more easy cocktail recipes that we have own our site.
This is probably why we make it more than most, but that could also be because of my love for coffee as well. One will never know on that end.
WHAT KIND OF WISKEY SHOULD I USE?
Traditionally Jameson is used for this recipe but you can use any other kind of Irish whiskey such as:
- The Dead Rabbit
- Tullamore D.E.W.
- Redbreast
- Bushmills
- Teeling
- Powers
The list can go on and on, but Jameson is really easy to find and is not super expensive but if you are on a budget there are some cheaper whiskeys out there, just make sure it’s Irish!
So there are a few ways that you can drink this whiskey, traditionally it is sipped through the foam, but we have stirred it into the coffee itself to give it a smoother flavor as well.
You can choose to do either or. We like it both ways so we don’t recommend one over the other. We just live the drink as a whole so we won’t say that is best, it is personal preference.
Of course you can make this Irish Coffee Recipe non-alcoholic by leaving out the whiskey in it as well. We do that from time to time, there isn’t a lot of whiskey in it so it doesn’t really make a huge difference for us.
Sometimes we just want a good old non-alcoholic beverage and still enjoy the flavors of this, so by all means if you’re note feeling the liquor leave it out!
HOW TO STORE:
You really can’t store this recipe unfortunately, it is best served when it is hot and mixed together, reheating it will make it taste weird and if you are only making one or two drinks there is no need to store it anyways.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- To get the heavy cream to stay on top lightly spoon it or pour it over the back of the spoon.
- Serve this topped with whipped cream or mixed in, either way is fine.
- Jameson is used in this recipe but you can use any other Irish whiskey, see my tips on brands above.
- This is very lightly sweetened which I found was traditional. Add more sugar to taste. You can also sweeten the cream with powdered sugar.
- Some people add only brown sugar which will add a more caramelized flavor, if you would like that then up your brown sugar to 2 tsps.
- You can double this recipe or cut it in half to serve more or less people.
