A quick and easy soothing drink this Hot Toddy Recipe has delicious flavors that is spiked with whiskey. A great drink for a night cap or just to warm up.
If you have never heard of a Hot Toddy Recipe, I am absolutely going to tell you about them! They are one of the easiest drink recipes to make.
There are different versions of this drink some use tea bags and some don’t. Ours use a bag of tea to help with the flavor and it is absolutely amazing.
Not only is this a great cocktail but old wives tales say that Hot Toddy’s can soothe a sore throat and clear up any cold induced ingestion.
This has been one of those drinks that we like to turn to when we are feeling under the weather, but we also like to drink them just to warm up.
The flavors work so well together and you really just can’t go wrong with nice hot alcoholic drink that you can sit back and sip on on the cooler fall and winter nights.
Plus the ingredients ar super easy to come across at your local grocer and liquor stores, there is nothing complicated about this drink whatsoever.

WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- This recipe makes 1 drink, you can double or triple depending on who you’re enjoying one with.
- You can use whiskey, bourbon or rum for this although whiskey is the normal alcohol.
- This is warm and comforting with flavors that meld well together and go down smoothly.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT BOTTOM):
Hot water
Black tea bag
Whiskey
Honey
Lemon juice
Cinnamon sticks
Garnishes, optional
HOW TO MAKE A HOT TODDY RECIPE, STEP BY STEP:
- Pour the hot water into a mug and add the tea bag. Let it steep for 2 minutes.
- Remove the tea bag and discard it. To the mug, stir in the whiskey, honey, and lemon juice.
- Garnish with cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, star anise, or a lemon wedge.
DO I HAVE TO USE WHISKEY?
Traditionally whiskey is used in this recipe, we like to use Jack Daniels, other whiskey that will work would be Jim Beam, Southern Comfort, Evan Williams and more.
But if you are not a huge fan of whisky you can also use bourbon or rum in this recipe as well. I like it spiced if it is rum, such as Captain Morgan.
So you have your options on what you can use for this or what you have on hand as well.
IS A HOT TODDY RECIPE A GOOD COLD REMEDY?
Like I said before that old wives tales and folklore suggests that a Hot Toddy can really be a great soothing remedy for that cold.
With the ingredients in it such as the honey, it will soothe your throat. Whiskey itself is a good decongestant as well, so it is worth the try.
We do use this when we are sick, and I know many people who swear by this drink when they feel a cold coming on, so I mean it’s worth a try right?
HOW TO STORE:
While these are best enjoyed when they are first made, you can make a larger batch and store it in the refrigerator overnight.
You can pour into glasses and then warm up in the microwave, just do not warm it up too much as alcohol will evaporate under high heat.
