DO I HAVE TO USE RYE BREAD FOR THIS RECIPE?
Usually cocktail bread comes in rye and pumpernickel and that is what is traditional for this recipe.
You can choose to slice up pieces of a baguette and use that as well if you’d like.
CAN I MAKE THIS SPICY?
While this Hanky Panky Recipe has great flavor on it’s own and is not really spicy, you can add that spice.
If you want to add just a hint of spice or a little more than you can add in some crushed red pepper flakes. I suggest starting with 1/2 teaspoon and going from there.
CAN I MAKE THIS INTO A DIP?
Yes! That is one thing that we do a lot of the times if we are lazy and do not want to spread onto the bread.
You can brown your meat and then add the remaining ingredients to a crockpot until the cheese is melted.
You can serve this with any of your favorite chips, cocktail bread, baguettes etc.
WHAT OTHER MEATS CAN I USE?
While we use 2 different meats in this recipe you can swap out either. These two are traditional and go so well together.
If you want you can swap either out for ground chicken, ground turkey, italian sausage. You can also use just one meat as well.
HOW TO STORE:
These can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator where they will keep for up to 3-4 days.
You can also freeze this recipe, place on a baking sheet and place in the freezer for about an hour until frozen.
Once frozen transfer to a freezer bag or container and they will keep in the freezer for about 3 months.
To reheat, (this will work from both frozen and refrigerated) remove from the freezer to the refrigerator until thawed.
Heat your oven to 350 degrees F and bake for about 10-15 minutes until warmed through.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Traditionally this uses cocktail rye or pumpernickel bread but you can slice up a baguette and use that as well.
- To make it a little more spicy add some red pepper flakes to the meat mixture starting with about 1/2 teaspoon.
- You can change up the meats if you want, see above for ideas.
- Velveeta works best, but you can also use American cheese too.
- These can be frozen, see above on how to do that.
- Top with chopped parsley when serving, you could also use green onions.
- This makes a large batch and will serve a crowd.
