HOW TO MAKE FRENCH TOAST CASSEROLE, STEP BY STEP:

- In a large mixing bowl, add the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt and whisk together well until combined. It’s okay if some of the cinnamon floats to the top.
- Pour the mixture over the bread cubes in the baking dish.
- Use a large spoon and press the bread into the custard mixture so it starts to soak it up. Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator to soak for at least 6 hours, or overnight.
- When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350ยฐF and remove the plastic wrap from the dish.
- Whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a mixing bowl, until smooth.
- Drizzle this topping all over the top of the casserole.
- Cover the baking dish with tin foil and bake in the oven for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and you can insert a knife into the center and it comes out clean.
- Let the casserole cool for 15 minutes before slicing and serving with a dusting of powdered sugar and maple syrup, or your other favorite toppings.
DO I HAVE TO USE FRENCH BREAD?
I love to use a good crusty French bread for this easy French Toast Casserole recipe. But other bread varieties that you can use are: brioche, challah, sourdough, white bread, or Texas toast.
Just be sure you are using the same amount of bread as listed in the recipe ingredients and cube it the same way.
WHAT OTHER TOPPINGS CAN I USE?
Topping options are endless, here are a few of our favorites: whipped cream, fresh fruit, apple pie filling, caramel sauce, warm vanilla sauce, preserves, ice cream, or toasted nuts.
You can top this with any of your favorites because the casserole itself has a basic flavor, topping it with various toppings will make it a whole different flavor.
WHY IS MY FRENCH TOAST CASSEROLE SOGGY?
If you have a soggy casserole, chances are the bread you chose was too flimsy, thin or weak. Using crusty bread helps work against soggy casserole.
You could have also added too much milk or custard mix that didn’t bake up correctly.
WHAT MIX-INS CAN I ADD?
If you want to switch up the flavor a little bit some options for some mix-ins include:
- Fruit, fresh or frozen
- Chocolate chips
- Raisins
- Pie filling
- Dried cranberries
HOW TO STORE:
Keep any leftover casserole covered with foil or plastic wrap in the refrigerator where it will keep for up to 3 days.
This can also be frozen, to do this place in a freezer container and it will keep for up to 3 months.
To defrost, remove from the freezer into the refrigerator overnight until thawed. Rewarm in the oven or microwave.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Add some freshly grated nutmeg to the custard for a little twist, perfect for the holiday seasons.
- You can use all milk in place of the heavy cream, to me the heavy cream adds more richness to this decadent casserole but it is not necessary.
- You can make this up to 12-15 hours ahead of time, just store it covered in the refrigerator.
- This can be frozen, see above on how to do that.
- You can add other toppings, see above for options.
- We like a crusty french bread but any sturdier bread will work.
- Add some mix-ins to switch it up, see above for some ideas.
