HOW TO MAKE FRENCH TOAST WAFFLE STICKS, STEP BY STEP:
- Preheat your waffle maker to medium heat.
- In a shallow bowl that will fit your bread, lightly beat the egg.
- Whisk in the milk, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon until combined.
- Lightly spray the waffle iron. Dip the bread into the egg mixture on both sides, do not let it soak up too much, we are looking for a light yet even coating.
- Place the piece of bread into the waffle maker and close the lid.
- Cook for 3-5 minutes until golden brown and the bread starts to crisp.
- Place the french toast on a wire rack over a sheet tray while you cook the rest of the slices, this will prevent the bread from getting soggy and making sure it is crisp.
- Once all the bread is done, cut into sticks.
- Serve with a dusting powdered sugar and maple syrup for dipping.
WHAT KIND OF BREAD SHOULD I USE?
Any thick cut or stable bread will work with these Waffle Sticks. We like to use brioche as it pairs well with the nice buttery custard of the eggs.
You can also use challah, french bread, texas toast, cinnamon swirl, cinnamon raisin, etc. You can change up the breads to create different flavors!
WHAT KIND OF WAFFLE IRON DO I NEED?
There is no set specific waffle iron that you need for this, you can use a round or a square one. It al depends on how you want your French Toast Waffle Sticks to come out.
We have both round and square and have used both, and they work perfectly fine on either of them.
WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A WAFFLE MAKER?
I understand that not everyone has a waffle maker, another thing you can do with these is use a grill pan, panini press or a George Forman.
Now they won’t turn out exactly like these pictures but you will still have indentations and cooked Waffle Sticks, just in a different form!
HOW TO STORE:
If you have any leftover Waffle Sticks you can place them in an airtight container or ziptop bag in your refrigerator for up to one week.
These can also be frozen. Place in a freezer bag and they should keep for up to 8 months, defrost in your refrigerator or on the countertop.
To reheat we just like to place in the microwave until heated through, if you want them crispier you can place them in the toaster as well.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Thick cut bread works best for these.
- Switch up your bread flavor for different types of Waffle Sticks.
- These can be frozen, see my tips above.
- If you don’t have a waffle maker you can use a grill pan, panini press or a George Forman.
