HOW TO MAKE RED WHITE AND BLUE COOKIES, STEP BY STEP:
- Start by preheating the oven to 350ยฐ F while you line two cookie sheets with parchment paper and set them aside.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat butter and ยพ cup of sugar using a paddle attachment on medium-high until light and fluffy (which usually takes around 2-3 minutes).
- Add in the egg and vanilla to the butter and sugar mixture and beat on medium-high until well combined.
- Combine flour, baking soda and salt in a small bowl. Carefully and slowly, add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Don’t overmix.
- Once the dough has formed, separate cookie dough into three even portions.
- Place one portion of the dough back into the mixing bowl and add the red food coloring and mix until combined.
- Wipe out the mixing bowl before adding another portion of dough and adding the blue food coloring and mixing that until combined.
- Then, divide each dough ball into 12 even-sized pieces. Roll the small colored chunks into balls.
- Gently and carefully, press one piece of each color dough together to create a ball with three distinct sections. Looking from the top, the ball should look like a pie cut into three large pieces.
- Roll each tri colored cookie in the remaining two tablespoons of sugar and place them on the parchment-lined cookie sheets, leaving at least two inches between each cookie.
- Bake cookies in the oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are slightly golden.
- Remove the cookies from the oven and allow cookies to cool on the cookie sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to finish cooling.
- Serve and enjoy.
CAN I MAKE THESE AHEAD OF TIME?
You can make the dough a few hours ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator covered and wrapped in plastic wrap if desired. In fact, chilling the dough will help make these cookies thicker and even chewier!
CAN I ADD ANY ADDITIONS?
To make these even more festive, you can add some dried blueberries, white chocolate chips, chocolate chips, diced strawberries, and cranberries to your cookie batter.
You can also melt some festive colored candy melts and drizzle on your cookies for even more patriotic red, white, and blue pops of color. Festive and colorful sprinkles would also be a great addition.
DO I HAVE TO ROLL THESE IN SUGAR BEFORE BAKING?
We highly recommend rolling in sugar before baking, this helps give a crispy outer crust but yet a soft and chewy outside.
This also adds to the flavor as well with an extra sugar kick with each and every single bite. But it is completely optional so it is totally up to you what you want to do.
HOW TO STORE:
These cookies can be stored in an airtight container on the counter where they will keep for for up to 4-5 days.
These can also be frozen, to do that place in a freeze container or bag and they will keep for up to 2 months.
To defrost, remove to countertop overnight until thawed.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Remember that the cookies continue to finish baking or set a bit once you remove them from the oven and let them cool on the cookie sheet for a few minutes before letting the finish cooling on the wire racks. So don’t over bake them by waiting too long to pull them out.
- Always use the transfer and level method when measuring flour, don’t just scoop it straight from the container.
- Vary the amount of food dye to get it to your desired shade of red and blue, we highly recommend a gel food coloring.
- You can frost these with your favorite frosting if desired, try to use colored frosting so you don’t lose all your Red, White, and Blue vibes.
- You can skip the rolling in sugar step if you prefer.
- These can be frozen, see above on how to do that.
- Drizzle with melted colored candy melts and decorate with sprinkles for more of a flair.
