Quick and easy these Fish and Chips are battered in a delicious beer batter and fried until golden. Served with steak fries this traditional English dish couldn’t get any better.
Growing up we always went to fish fries. It was just something that we did around here. All the local dives had one, neighbors through one at least once a year.
Now living in Minnesota it was just the thing to do. We are the land of 10,000 lakes, fish was everywhere. So growing up eating fish and chips was nothing short of routine to us.
I will confess something to you. I am not a fish lover. *GASP* I know. People ask me all the time how I cannot like fish, and really I don’t have the answer to that.
There are certain seafood I do eat, ones that are deep fried like this Fish and Chips recipe, shrimp, fish sticks, tuna from a can and that about sums up my tolerance for fish.
So why put up a recipe for fish if I don’t like it? Well, this is a recipe I do like. And not all the recipes I post do I like, I like to write for what my readers want. And my family isn’t very picky so I cook for them as well.
I do try everything once, and twice if I like it and this Fish and Chips recipe is no joke. Literally one of our favorites and one of the best ways to eat fish, IMO.
WHAT INGREDIENTS DO YOU NEED:

- French Fries
One of my favorite past times is deep frying. My husband and myself would dedicate a night a week to our “deep fry” night. I know it’s not the healthiest things, but it sure is good.
Fish and Chips became a regular part of that rotation over the years, and I’m lucky that my kids are fish lovers because we do seem to have an over abundance all year round.
This beer batter doesn’t make a huge fluffy coating like some do. I’m not big on the huge coated fish. I like to have the perfect fish to batter ratio and I think that this one is it.
The batter itself will be wet, but it is supposed to be. It will really tighten up in the oil and puff up ever so slightly but also give a nice crispness to each bite.
HOW TO MAKE FISH AND CHIPS:
- Cook French fries according to package directions, we deep fry ours so you can either do it before or after frying your fish.
- Preheat deep fryer to 350.
- Cut your fish into fillets or if using frozen, defrost and pat dry, set aside.
- In bowl whisk together 1 cup flour, baking powder, cayenne, salt and pepper.
- In another bowl add your remaining flour.
- In yet another bowl whisk together your beer and eggs until combined.
- Slowly add your beer mixture into your dry ingredients and whisk until no lumps remain.
- Dip your fish into flour and coat on all sides then dip into batter, slowly lower into oil making sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom.
- Fry on each side 3-4 minutes or until golden.
- Remove and transfer to paper towel lined plate to drain, repeat with remaining fish.
- Serve with French fries, tartar sauce and malt vinegar (my moms preference) if desired.
We make fish and chips our of many different types of fish, we prefer cod or haddock, but have also used walleye, tilapia, etc. I mean really use what you have on hand or can get access too.
Luckily our local grocer has a nice meat department with great cuts of fish, so we are able to get pretty much whatever we want.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Pat your fish dry, it helps the flour and batter to stick onto it well creating a better coating.
- Drizzle fish with a little lemon juice for a pop of flavor, it’s so good that way!
- Fry slices of fish for fish tacos and serve with some slaw, we do this often,
- Make sure fish is defrosted and do not try to fry frozen fish the outside will cook faster than the fish itself.
- You might have some batter leftover, we like to use it to make beer battered onion rings.
- Use a light beer, it just tastes better in my personal opinion.
So if you want a fun and easy fish and chips recipe, this one is it. Quick, minimal ingredients and feeds a crowd!

How much baking powder do you use? It isn’t in the ingredient list, but it calls for it in the flour mixture.
