Easy, cheesy and a family favorite these Crockpot Cheesy Potatoes are a no-fail recipe that is perfect for dinnertime, potlucks or when you’re in a hurry and want to fix it and forget it.
Who doesn’t love cheesy potatoes, or potatoes also known as “funeral potatoes”? This recipe has always been one of my families most beloved recipes and one of my kids most asked for.
Simplicity is what we are looking at these days and in the summertime, well technically all year round we adore our crockpot and crockpot recipes are ones we make probably more often than anything else.
We love meals that we can just throw in something, set the temp and forget about it until it’s done. This cheesy potato recipe is the perfect one to do that with! Hands down the best!
WHAT INGREDIENTS DO YOU NEED TO MAKE CROCKPOT CHEESY POTATOES?
- Frozen diced potatoes
- Cream of chicken soup
- Sour cream
- Seasonings
- Diced onion
- Cheese
- Melted butter
Now if that list of ingredients doesn’t get any more simple than that then I don’t know what will! I mean this is a recipe you can’t not try, trust me when I say that it makes the absolute perfect side dish!
HOW DO YOU MAKE THIS CHEESY POTATO RECIPE?
You really cant get any more simple with the steps of this recipe in all honesty!
- Mix together your potatoes, onions, sour cream, cream of chicken soup, seasonings, melted butter and a portion of your cheese.
- Set slow cooker on low and cook for 4 hours.
- Remove lid and sprinkle with remaining cheese and cover for 15 minutes until cheese is melted.
CAN YOU MAKE THIS RECIPE IN THE OVEN?
100% yes you can. We do make this in the oven from time to time, but the crockpot has been one of my favorite ways to make it when we are short on time around dinnertime and we want something that is ready to go when we are.
To make it in the oven you do all the same steps as you would make it in the crockpot. You add all your cheese into mixture instead of separating it out.
You bake at covered with tinfoil at 350 for about 40-45 minutes removing the foil in the last 10-15 minutes of baking to get that cheese nice and bubbly.
So with this cheesy potato casserole recipe you can make it in the crockpot or in the oven, whichever way is easiest for you.
I really like to do the crockpot because the cheese on top in there gets really gooey and I adore gooey cheese so this is my preferred method!

Easy to make and very tasty!!

This is my go to cheesy potato recipe!! I add a can of cream of mushroom instead of sour cream. Just what family prefers. Love it!! I Did try with real potatoes instead of the frozen and it turned out ok… but the potatoes turn into like mush. This will be going into my cook book!! ๐

If using Campbell’s condensed soup, do I add the can of water too?
Tornadough Alli
No, no water added with the soup.
Natalie
This looks so good! Would doubling it still fit in the Crock-Pot?
Tornadough Alli
I have personally never doubled it, but to be safe I would use an 8 quart crockpot, otherwise just dump your potatoes in your crockpot before making and see if they fit, then you should be good to go!
Karen
What size crockpot?
Tornadough Alli
We use a 6qt for this recipe.

I really loved this, but I had one problem. Some of the potatoes and all of the onions did not get done in 4 hours and 15 min on low. I ate some, but then turned the crock pot back on for another hour.
Tornadough Alli
I’m so sorry you had issues! I’m happy you did enjoy this, I haven’t heard of them not being cooked like that, but I’m happy that it all worked out in the end for you!

Thatโs ok. No problem. I loved them so much that Iโm making them again tomorrow. Just gonna cook them 5 hours and 15 min this time. Thanks!

Have made this with fresh potatoes?
Tornadough Alli
I have not, but I know some of my readers have, you can reference some of the comments to see their experiences.

Do I need to increase the time if I double it.
Tornadough Alli
I would cook the normal time and check it and see, if it’s not done by then I would recheck every 30 minutes or so.

This recipe is awesome. I made something very similar but I like this better. Mine is fixed in the oven. I am going to try this in a 9×13 pan and in the oven. My son likes my recipe beat but I wonder if he likes it in the oven better. The big difference to me is the onion powder and garlic powder in this one and I like that!
Julie
Iโm making this but adding green onions!
Janet
Can this be frozen?
Tornadough Alli
Are you thinking before or after cooking?

Nothing left. My daughter-in-law scooped a helping to take to work also.

This is so great! I love having comments like these. Thank you so much for taking your time to come back and comment and rate my recipe! I’m so happy everyone, especially your daughter-in-law liked it!

Made this today for Homecoming at my church. It was pretty good and the crockpot was scraped clean. The only thing I would do differently next time is add less garlic powder. It was a little to garlicky for me. I thawed my potatoes in the refrigerator first. It helped it to cook a little quicker.
Allysha
How long did it take to cook since your potatoes weren’t frozen??
Alexandra
How would you suggest adding corn flakes to this recipe
Tornadough Alli
So what I would possibly do for this is to toss some corn flakes in butter and toast them on the stove for a little bit then sprinkle them over the top and let cook for maybe 10 minutes longer, or just sprinkle them on before serving.
Andy
Made this for a work pot luck today. Everyone loved it including me.
Thanks for posting this recipie Cous.

Thanks for taking the time to come and comment on here! I’m so happy everyone loved it! It’s one we make all the time, I’ll make sure next time I see you I’ll make this ๐
Alexa
Did you cook it ahead of time and reheat ?
Jenifer
Made these for Easter dinner today and I wish I had doubled the recipe!! Everyone devoured them. Only change I made was using cream of celery soup because my daughter is vegetarian. Easy and delicious!!
Tornadough Alli
That is so great to hear! I love that you made this work for your family! Going to have to try to make it with the cream of celery as well!

How are the nutritional facts all zero
Tornadough Alli
They are zero because I have just started adding in nutritional labels to all my recipes so I have to manually go in and change each recipe which I’ve been doing over time (takes a while to do) I have since updated this recipe to reflect the nutritional values, I hope that helps!
Jen
Actually, if you use Pacific cream of chicken – that brand of cream of chicken soup IS gluten free. Just an FYI, because I’m gluten free and can easily make this recipe. ๐
Tornadough Alli
Thank you Jen! I don’t have a lot of knowledge on gluten free stuff so I really appreciate you chiming in and letting us know that this can be made that way!
Julie
Where can you find Pacific brand soups?? Iโm gluten free as well and Iโm trying to figure out how to make this AND eat it as well. We live in the south but Iโm not against buying from amazon ๐๐ป
Staci
Pacific Brand soups work great for recipes needing to be gluten free. We have found for both the cream of chicken and cream of mushroom we add a tsp. Of better than bullion( also gluten free) to enhance the soups flavor
Jackie
Hi, I think you are misleading saying that it is gluten free, cream of chicken up has gluten. Just thought you should know. Thanks
Tornadough Alli
I have never once stated this is gluten free. Pinterest stated it is gluten free, they pull the ingredients from our site and THEY are the ones that state that. There is no way I can change what their site states. Sorry if it is misleading but I don’t state that it is anywhere on my website.
