The perfect spring and summer side dish, this Creamy Cucumber Salad is super simple and absolutely flavorful.
Cucumbers are just so refreshing, I love eating them plain or in salads like this Creamy Cucumber Salad.
We do a lot of gatherings, picnics and BBQ’s in the spring and summer and this salad is one side dish that we tend to bring a lot.
More or less it gets requested a lot, which I do not mind as it is super simple and you can make it ahead of time.
Having to refrigerator for roughly an hour before serving, this is great to just make ahead before you need to bring or prepare the rest of your food.
Plus, this Creamy Cucumber Salad goes with any and all the things – trust me, there is nothing that you can’t serve this with.
If you are looking for that perfect side dish to serve with your burgers, brats, etc this spring and summer, you need to make this Creamy Cucumber Salad.

WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Easy and available ingredients help this come together quickly.
- It has so much flavor from the dressing.
- The onions add a nice crunchy and flavorful kick to the salad.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST):
Sour cream
Mayonnaise
Red wine vinegar
Dried dill
Granulated sugar
Coarse kosher salt
Dried onion
Garlic powder
English cucumbers
Red onion
HOW TO MAKE A CREAMY CUCUMBER SALAD, STEP BY STEP:
- In a large bowl add the dressing ingredients. Mix until fully combined. Taste to see if more salt is needed.
- Add the cucumbers and red onion.
- Toss until the cucumbers and onions are fully combined.
- Refrigerate for at least one hour before serving.
DO I HAVE TO USE ENGLISH CUCUMBERS?
No, you can use regular cucumbers for this that you can buy at the grocery store that would be alongside English Cucumbers.
They do have a slightly thicker skin on them, so you can decide if you want to peel them or leave them unpeeled.
CAN I USE SOMETHING OTHER THAN SOUR CREAM?
If you are not a fan of sour cream, or just do not want to use it you can use plain greek yogurt in it’s place.
Make sure that you are getting plain, and not vanilla – sometimes it is hard to tell so make sure you look closely.
HOW LONG DOES THIS CUCUMBER SALAD NEED TO CHILL?
We like to chill this for at least 1 hour before we serve it. This allows time for all the flavors to marry and to cool the salad itself down.
HOW MANY CUPS OF CUCUMBERS DO I NEED?
After everything is cut regardless of using English Cucumbers or regular cucumbers you will want to end up with roughly 5-6 cups of sliced cucumbers.
Make sure that you are slicing them thinly, you really do not want a huge chunk of cucumber in this salad.
HOW TO STORE:
This can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator where it will keep for up to 3 days.
We like to serve within 24 hours as the longer it sits the more liquid the cucumbers release and the dressing gets watered down.
We do not recommend freezing this recipe.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- You can use regular cucumbers if you cannot find English, see above on how to do that.
- Greek yogurt can be used in place of the sour cream.
- This can be stored up to 3 days but we recommend serving within 24 hours so it doesn’t get too watery.
- Make sure you are slicing your onions and cucumbers thinly.
- Make sure that you chill this for at least 1 hour before serving.
- This goes great with any main dish, so its perfect for picnics, gatherings and BBQ’s.
- In place of the sugar you can also use honey.
- If you want to use fresh dill you can use 1 Tablespoon of fresh for every 1 teaspoon of dried.
Love a quick, easy and refreshing side dish? Then you absolutely cannot go wrong with this beloved Creamy Cucumber Salad.
