With only 3 ingredients and 10 minutes you can have yourself your own Buffet Style Chinese Donuts. Super simple, easy and absolutely addicting.
I have to admit, we are pretty much addicted to take-out Chinese food. It’s one of my guilty pleasures in life. I am not ashamed at all, it’s just so good.
Over the years though, we have wanted to save some money and started making our own take-out recipes at home, they usually pretty simple and budget friendly.
These Chinese Donuts are super budget friendly and some of my other favorite take-out ones we make include Egg Drop Soup, Potstickers and Sweet and Sour Chinese Chicken.
I love about these donuts or what I also call them “Sugar Buns” is that they only consist of 3 ingredients and you can make as little or as many as you like!
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Minimal ingredients that you usually have on hand help you whip this together in no time.
- They are simple and can be made in a regular pan or deep fryer, whatever you prefer.
- They taste almost identical to the donuts you would get at a traditional restaurant.
WHAT ARE CHINESE DONUTS CALLED?
Traditional Chinese Donuts are called Youtiao. They are different than the ones you see at the Chinese buffet and are more of a cruller or churro type as you can see here.
But we still call these Chinese Donuts because essentially that is what they label the ones at the buffets that we have experienced.
But if you want to try the “true” ones then I would check out making the Youtaio recipe!
HOW TO MAKE CHINESE DONUTS, STEP BY STEP:
Usually I do in process photos for this step, but these are so simple that it really wasn’t warranted.
- Heat oil in pan or deep fryer to 350 degrees F.
- Add sugar to a bowl and set aside.
- Separate your rolls and shape into circles as some come out oblong.
- Add into oil, making sure to not overcrowd the fryer or pan and heat on each side for about 1-1 1/2 minutes.
- Remove from pan and dab off oil on a paper towel lined plate and place in sugar and coat, then serve immediately.
With these you can make your own dough, but around here we really don’t have the time for that and honestly I hate working with bread and yeast, etc.
Thats why a lot of the time when you see donuts on my website, they are baked donuts and not yeast donuts because like I said, I just don’t have time for that!
HOW LONG DO THESE DONUTS LAST?
I would highly suggest making and eating in the same day, same with regular donuts. They do get stale after a while, but they should be fine the next day as well.
To reheat them just pop them in the microwave for a few seconds to warm them up, but I would not keep any longer than 2 days.
These donuts are really great for any time of year. If you are having a huge Chinese dinner blow out, they are a great addition, but we like to make them just because.
They have become one of my kids favorite treats to munch on, and honestly mine as well. They are SUPER addicting, once you have on you literally cannot stop eating them.
Now I don’t know if that is a good or bad thing, but I really don’t care because they are easy, tasty and that is all that really matters when it comes to food for me.
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR MAKING CHINESE DONUTS:
- Do not use full-sized regular biscuits, you need to use the 7.5 oz cans, the smaller biscuits.
- If you cannot find the smaller biscuits, you can use larger ones, but you will have to cut them in half or quarters to make sure that they cook fully through without burning.
- We don’t drain our donuts for too long before dipping into the sugar because we need some of that grease still on the donuts to make sure the sugar holds.
- Do not be shy with the sugar, these are made to be coated in all the sugar!
- If you want to switch up the flavor add a little cinnamon to your sugar mixture.
So if you are looking for the perfectly simple, sweet and easy donut recipe then you need to whip up these Chinese Donuts immediately, you won’t be disappointed.
