WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Minimal ingredients but slowly cooked really bring the flavors togther.
- Piled on top of a bun with pickles or other toppings you can serve it however you like.
- This can be frozen, so if you have more than you can eat – freeze for later.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST):
Chopped deli ham, shaved or chipped
Sweet and smoky BBQ sauce
Chili sauce
Vegetable oil
Yellow onions
Black pepper
Hamburger buns
HOW TO MAKE A BBQ CHIPPED HAM SANDWICH, STEP BY STEP:
- Heat the oil, over medium heat, in a large saucepot or Dutch oven and sauté the chopped onions for 2-3 minutes to soften.
- While the onions are cooking, coarsely chop through the ham just to make sure there are no large, bulky pieces.
- When the onions are softened, add the chopped ham to the pot and mix.
- Add the barbecue sauce, chili sauce, and black pepper to the ham and onions and stir thoroughly. If the sauce is looking too thick and a little dry, add a little water, ¼ cup at a time.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 45-50 minutes for best results.
- Remove from the heat and let stand for 10-15 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken up.
- Drop mounding piles onto hamburger buns and enjoy!
IS IT CHIPPED OR CHOPPED?
This can really go either way, some call it chipped, some call it chopped and some call it chip chopped.
There is many variations of the name, but with the same type of recipe. We go with chopped in our version.
The best ham for this recipe is from a 10-pound loaf of processed lunch meat made from finely chopped (or ground) ham, hence the name ‘Chopped Ham’ (trust me it gets confusing, see below on how to order it from the deli).
HOW DO I ORDER THIS AT THE DELI COUNTER?
The ideal cut to ask the deli for is ‘Chipped’, not sliced. Chipped ham is razor-thin and lacy, often falling apart in your hands.
However, not all deli workers understand just how thin ‘chipping’ should be and often you will end up with slightly thicker meat.
But don’t fret, just run a sharp knife through the pile of ham a few times to break it up a little more and with all that saucy goodness you will forget it wasn’t perfect.
CAN THIS BE MADE IN A SLOW COOKER?
Want to make this low and slow, then yes it can be made in the slow cooker and pushed off to eat when you are ready.
Coat your crockpot with non-stick spray. Sauté your onions in a skillet for a few minutes and then dump everything into the crockpot.
Heat on low for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally. This would also be ideal for get-togethers when your guests are serving themselves buffet-style.
CAN I ADD ANYTHING TO THIS REICPE?
Super saucy dishes are great for sneaking in extra vegetables. Try doubling the onions and/or adding chopped bell peppers or even chopped jalapeños for a little extra heat.
HOW TO STORE:
This can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator where it will keep for up to 5 days.
You can also freeze this recipe, place in a ziptop bag of a freezer safe container and it will keep for up to 60 days.
To defrost, remove to the refrigerator until thawed then place in a pan on the stove until heated through.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Make sure you are ordering from the deli correctly so you get the right consistency, see above on how to do that.
- You can use any BBQ sauce you like but we like to use sweet and smoky.
- Easily double this recipe to serve more people or to save for later.
- This can be frozen, see above on how to do that.
- You can make this in the slow cooker, again see above on how to do that.
- Make sure that you use higher quality buns that can hold the saucy deliciousness.
- Add in some vegetables, see above on some ideas.
