- You can double this recipe to serve more people.
- This is super filling with amazing flavor.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST):
Onion
Canola or vegetable oil
Ground beef
Salt
Pepper
Garlic powder
Worcestershire sauce
American cheese
Hoagie rolls
Butter
Iceberg lettuce
Tomato
Ketchup
Mayonnaise
HOW TO MAKE A CHOPPED CHEESE SANDWICH, STEP BY STEP:
- Lightly butter each side of all 4 of your hoagie rolls.
- In a skillet, grill the rolls, butter side down, till golden brown. Set to the side on a plate.
- Add ketchup to one side of the roll and mayo to the other side.
- Add your ground beef to a bowl and season with the salt, pepper, and garlic powder, and Worcestershire. Using your hands to gently mix the meat. Divide the meat into 4 pieces and make a sort of oval type patty of each piece. Try to not to overwork them. Set aside.
- Add half the onion and all the oil to the skillet over medium heat and cook for about 5 minutes, till softened. Push the onions to the side.
- Add two of the patties to the skillet and cook for about 5-6 minutes. Make sure to mix the onions on the side from time to time.
- Turn the meat over. After cooking for 2 minutes on the second side, place 1 slice of American cheese on each patty and the onions on top of the cheese.
- Use a spatula and start chopping each patty into large chunks, letting it not be one entire patty anymore, letting the cheese melt into the cracks of the meat. You donโt want to chop the meat too small but donโt want especially large pieces either.
- Mix the meat, onions and cheese together till the meat is cooked all the way through and the cheese and onions are mixed in.
- Reduce heat to low and organize each meat mixture in the pan to be in about the same size as your hoagie and place another slice of American cheese on top. (tear your cheese in half and place it longways on the meat).
- Once your cheese on top is melted, gently transfer them to the prepared hoagie.
- Top with tomato slices and lettuce and serve hot.
- Repeat the process with the remaining onions and meat. If you have a lot of grease in your pan, drain it before cooking the onions. There will be enough oil in your pan even after draining it that you wonโt need to add any with the onions.
WHAT IS THE BEST TYPE OF CHEESE TO USE?
Any sliced American cheese will work, we like to use a more non-processed cheese like Bongards if you can, or even the sliced Sargento slices.
You can also switch up your cheese, we love American and it is classic for this Chopped Cheese Sandwich, but provolone, pepper jack, monterey jack, etc will work as well.
CAN I ADD ANY OTHER TOPPINGS TO THIS SANDWICH?
You can really add any of your favorite burger toppings to this, some ideas that will work include:
- Sauteed Mushrooms
- Grilled Peppers
- Bacon
- Avocado Slices
- Jalapenos
Whatever you think will taste great with this, will work! Just give it a try and see what you like best.
CAN I COOK EVERYTHING AT ONCE?
You can, if you have a larger skillet or using a griddle will help you cook everything at once and not in batches.
We do this when we are in a hurry or are making a double batch, so if you don’t want to do everything twice, then just use a larger skillet or griddle.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO KEEP THESE WARM AND MELTY?
I highly suggest wrapping in foil when they are assembled. This keeps the heat in and the cheese melted.
This is also an easier way for people to eat it where it won’t be as messy as well, especially if you have smaller children.
HOW TO STORE:
I do not recommend storing the sandwich assembled. But you can store the beef, onion and cheese mixture.
Place the beef mixture in an airtight container and it will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
To reheat, place back in a skillet until everything is warmed through and then assemble your sandwiches.
I do not recommend freezing this recipe.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Make sure you are using lean ground beef, at least 80/20.
- Other toppings can be added, see above for some ideas.
- We do not recommend freezing this sandwich.
- Wrapping in foil really keeps this melty and easy to serve.
- To make everything at once use a larger skillet or a griddle.
- Easily double this recipe.
