WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Easy to find ingredients help this come together effortlessly.
- Everything is just mixed together to let sit until ready to serve.
- This is kid and adult friendly!
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST):
Over-ripe bananas
Old fashioned rolled oats
Milk
Unsweetened Greek yogurt
Ground cinnamon
Vanilla extract
Brown sugar
Chia seeds
Chopped walnuts
HOW TO MAKE BANANA OVERNIGHT OATS, STEP BY STEP:
- Add two bananas to a medium mixing bowl and mash. Save the third banana to slice for topping.
- Add oats, milk, yogurt, cinnamon, vanilla, brown sugar, and chia seeds to mashed bananas and mix until well combined.
- Pour into four 8-ounce containers (I used jars).
- Cover and refrigerate overnight (minimum 4 hours).
- Slice remaining banana.
- Top oats with banana slices, walnut pieces, and a sprinkle of chia seeds, then mix and serve.
DO I HAVE TO USE THE CHIA SEEDS?
While these do not have much taste to them, they are a superfood and we love adding them where we can.
If you are not a fan of chia seeds or simply do not want to use them, you can absolutely leave them out.
HOW LONG DO THESE OVERNIGHT OATS NEED TO SIT?
These are preferred to sit overnight, hence the term “overnight oats” so usually 12 hours.
But you can let them sit for a minimum of 4 hours, they might not soak up all the milk and be as tender as they would if you let them sit longer.
CAN I ADD ANYTHING TO THE OAT MIXTURE?
Absolutely! We like adding in some of the chopped walnuts to give it some more crunch.
Some other things that you can add if you want include: mini or regular chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, diced strawberries, a spoonful of peanut butter, etc.
HOW CAN I MAKE THIS SWEETER?
If you want to make this a little bit more sweet without adding more sugar, you can add some maple syrup or honey into the mixture.
Add as much as you’d like, and you can also drizzle it over the top or mix in when serving.
HOW TO STORE:
These can be stored in jars or airtight containers in the refrigerator where they will keep for up to 4-5 days.
We do not recommend freezing these Banana Overnight Oats.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- No cooking needed, overnight oats are traditionally served cold, eaten straight out of the fridge. Also, the oats will soften after soaking in the liquid overnight.
- Use any of your favorite milks, we used 2%.
- Make sure that you are using old fashioned oats, we used whole grain.
- These are best when soaked at least 8-12 hours but 4 hours is the minimum.
- Feel free to add other additions to the mixture, see above for some ideas.
- We do not recommend freezing this recipe.
- Other sweetners can be added, see above on how to do that.
- We like to place our oats directly into jars (4 8 ounce jars) but you can keep them in the bowl to soak and serve in 8 ounce containers after they have sat.
- Over-ripe bananas produce the best flavor, you can use less ripe bananas but the flavor will not be there.
- You can use granulated sugar in place of the brown sugar.
- The chia seeds are optional, but highly encouraged.
