The flavors of this Tiramisu Recipe are hands down just amazing, as are pretty much any Tiramisu that you come across, they are all usually similar in how they are made.
Some of the ingredients will skew from time to time but people have their own traditions and their own way of making them and The Best Tiramisu Recipe is my favorite way.
With easy ingredients and no bake, you really can’t go wrong with this classic dish! It is super flavorful and all different flavors shine through.
From the creamy layers, to the coffee, the chocolate and more. With this dessert you will not have any lackluster when it comes to the flavor.
I love that this is no bake, when I don’t have to use up oven space for things around the holidays the better. The hardest part is waiting for it to sit!

WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- This is not heavy or super right but light and flavorful.
- This can be cut in half to serve a smaller crowd.
- Alcohol can be used in this or omitted.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT BOTTOM):
Egg yolks
Granulated sugar
Milk
Heavy whipping cream
Powdered sugar
Vanilla extract
Mascarpone cheese
Strong coffee
Kahlua
Ladyfingers
Cocoa powder
Chocolate shavings, optional
HOW TO MAKE THE BEST TIRAMISU RECIPE, STEP BY STEP:
- In a small saucepan whisk the egg yolks and sugar together until smooth. Whisk in the milk until smooth. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Once at a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Take off the heat and place it on the counter to cool for 30 minutes. Stir it every few minutes so it cools faster.
- Pour this mixture into a bowl and place it in the fridge for 1 hour. Stir it a couple of times to make sure it cools down.
- While cooling, make the whipped cream by adding the heavy cream to a large bowl with the powdered sugar and vanilla. Using an electric hand mixer, whip until it just forms stiff peaks, do not over mix. Place in the refrigerator until ready to assemble.
- Add the mascarpone to a large bowl and stir it with a fork just to break it up. Add the first custard mixture to the bowl and whisk them together until combined.
- Next add the whipped cream to the bowl and fold it in gently until there are no streaks left.
- Place the coffee and kahlua in a small bowl, stir together.
- Take the ladyfingers one at a time and dip them into the coffee mixture on both sides quickly, do not let them absorb too much liquid. Place them into the bottom of an 11×7 baking dish. Form one layer, you may need to break some of the ladyfingers to fit.
- Top with half of the cream, smooth it out. Add another layer of ladyfingers, pressing them in gently. Top with the remaining cream and smooth it out.
- Dust with the cocoa powder. Cover and place in the fridge for at least 6 hours to set. I prefer to let it set up overnight.
- Add chocolate shavings if using, slice, and serve.
WHAT KIND OF ALCOHOL IS BEST FOR A TIRAMISU RECIPE?
We like to use Kahlua in this recipe but other recipes call for other alcohol. Some other options that you can use include Marsala wine, rum, brandy or any other coffee liquor.
We like Kahlua because it’s easy accessible and one of the liquors that we usually have on hand for various other reasons. You can also omit the alcohol if you like, or just use half the amount.
HOW LONG DOES THIS HAVE TO SIT?
This needs to chill for at least 6 hours. This helps the whole dish to set up and gives time for the ladyfingers to really soak up the liquid and become soft.
It will make it easier to cut, but still will be in tact where it is not melting away and the pieces will hold themselves together.
WHAT IS MASCARPONE CHEESE?
Mascarpone is a soft Italian cheese like cream cheese. But unlike cream cheese it is made of only two ingredients and those are heavy cream and citric or tartaric acid.
It is also higher in fat content than cream cheese and is made in a different fashion.
WHERE DO I FIND LADYFINGERS?
Ladyfingers are usually a specialty item that you will only find around the holidays and you can find it down the baking aisle or the cookie aisle at your local grocer.
We usually order it online, and get ours off of Amazon as they have them year round. Here is a link to the ladyfingers that we usually use.
HOW TO STORE:
This can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container where it should keep for up to 2 days. You will not want to go any longer than that or it will get soggy.
You can also freeze this. Although best served fresh this can be assembled (leaving the cocoa powder and chocolate off) and wrapped in plastic wrap then foil where it will keep in the freezer for 2-3 months.
Let defrost in the refrigerator overnight before cutting and serving.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Do not substitute the mascarpone cheese with cream cheese, the flavor will be off.
- Make sure your mascarpone is at room temperature before using.
- You can use a variety of liquors, see tips above, or omit it all together.
- Make sure you have a strong brewed coffee for this as this is one of the main flavor aspects.
- This needs to chill for at least 6 hours.
- Chocolate shavings are completely optional but we absolutely love them.
