WHAT IS THE BEST CHOCOLATE TO USE?
This is a personal preference. We like to use a baking bar as it melts better into the mixture, we also melt it before adding into the milk as well.
For this recipe we use bittersweet chocolate, we felt that this worked best with the flavor that we were going for. We didn’t want it overly sweet.
Bittersweet chocolate makes great hot chocolate and is the perfect accompaniment to this Peppermint Hot Chocolate.
WHAT ALCOHOL IS BEST TO USE?
We have always found that using Peppermint Schnapps has been our favorite go-to when spiking our hot chocolate.
You can use whatever peppermint flavored alcohol that you like just taste to adjust the amount of peppermint flavor, starting lower is better.
PEPPERMINT EXTRACT!
This is a very potent extract to use we start off smaller with the amounts and then add more as needed, you will need less extract if you are using the alcohol.
Like I said above regarding the alcohol start lower and then add more to taste and get it to your desired flavor, you do not want to over do it on your flavoring with this.
HOW TO STORE:
You can store any leftover hot chocolate in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, place back on the stove and reheat.
The chocolate may separate and you will want to get that mixed back in. Pour into glasses and top with your favorite toppings.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Make sure that you separately melt your chocolate before adding it to your milk mixture.
- Start low on your peppermint extract and work your way up same with your alcohol.
- This can easily be doubled to serve a crowd or even larger, you can keep it warm in a slow cooker.
- Make sure to use a chocolate baking bar for this, this makes the best hot chocolate!
