Hot chocolate and coffee ice cream make this Affogato recipe one that you can whip up in a flash! Two ingredients and you have your self a delicious pick me up!
My family loves ice cream around here. In all honesty, I have never been the biggest ice cream fan ever. There is just something about eating it plain that has never enticed me.
But I’m the type of person who will have a milkshake, malt or these Hot Chocolate Affogatos! You guys, seriously if you’ve never tried an affogato I highly encourage you to do so.
WHAT IS AFFOGATO?
Affogato is an Italian ice cream based dessert that starts usually with a scoop of gelato or ice cream and is drowned in espresso or coffee.
You can also add liquor to this mix too to make it more of a boozy affogoto, some people like to add Bailey’s or some rum.
Now I wanted to give it a little twist, since ice cream doesn’t last long in my house but however we do love ourselves some coffee ice cream.
WHAT INGREDIENTS DO YOU NEED?
- Coffee ice cream
- Hot chocolate
- Spinkles
How can you get any more simple that that!
So my twist is that instead of pouring the espresso/coffee over the ice cream, we would have coffee ice cream and pour hot chocolate over the top instead.
I have a friend who absolutely loves mixing hot chocolate and coffee or cappuccino together and this dessert really reminds me of her and I know that it would be something that she would love.
I am more of a cold brew coffee drinker so this affogato recipe is right up my alley in terms of the eating temp. The hot chocolate slightly cools off as it touches the ice cream and it melts ever so slowly.
There are so many variations of this recipe that you could do. Now if you wanted to do the traditional route you could just grab a scoop of vanilla ice cream and pour some espresso over the top, but I mean lets get a little creative here.
This Hot Chocolate Affogato recipe you could sprinkles with the chocolate sprinkles like I have or some other ideas would be to include chocolate drizzle, caramel drizzle, a spritz of whipped topping.
You can pretty much dress this recipe up however you like it. But needless to say that this hot chocolate version is my favorite.
In baking coffee is added to chocolate to enhance the flavor, it really does the same in this recipe as well.
HOW TO MAKE AFFOGATO:
- Brew up a batch of hot chocolate, set aside.
- In mugs add a few scoops of coffee ice cream and slowly drizzle your hot chocolate over the top.
- Sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles and sip or use a spoon to enjoy.
But seriously though, this recipe is super simple and one you can whip up pretty much any time that you want because it takes less than 5 minutes.
If you want to switch up the coffee ice cream for the kids and do a vanilla hot chocolate version it would also be amazing. You can really play with the flavors but the coffee and chocolate is our absolute favorite.
