These sandwiches are known most commonly from Maid Rite and they are absolutely amazing, recipe is one that we have been making forever and we just cannot get enough!
With ground beef as the staple ingredient like a typical sloppy joe, but with a slight twist. No sauce, just some spices, brown sugar, onion and beef stock.
You wouldn’t believe with the little amount of ingredients that these sandwiches have that they can taste so good. They are a family favorite and kid approved.
These are great to bring to BBQ’s, parties, potlucks etc. It is super easy to just keep the meat mixture warm and have everyone serve themselves, this is perfect for anytime.

HOW TO MAKE LOOSE MEAT SANDWICHES, STEP BY STEP:
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and onions. Break up the ground beef into crumbles and stir occasionally for about 10 minutes until the onions are softened and there is no pink left in the meat. Drain the oil.
- Into the pan add the beef stock, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Stir everything to combine and then bring to a simmer, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 10-15 minutes until most of the liquid is absorbed.
- Serve immediately on burger buns with pickle chips and other toppings if desired.
CAN I USE ANOTHER MEAT FOR THESE SANDWICHES?
If you want to switch up the meat in this recipe you certainly can. You can use ground chicken, turkey or pork for this recipe and they will turn out with amazing flavor.
The flavors will be slightly different from the original recipe, but they still turn out to be a really tasty sandwich.
DO I HAVE TO USE THE BROWN SUGAR?
I personally love a little sweetness to my Loose Meat Sandwiches, but if you are not a fan of sweet in your sandwich recipe you can absolutely leave the brown sugar out.
WHAT OTHER TOPPINGS CAN I USE?
There are so many things that you can top these with, this is just our traditional way of serving them. Some other toppings that you can use include:
- Ketchup
- Mustard
- Cheese
- BBQ Sauce
- Onions
- Dijon Mustard
You can really top these with anything that you feel would compliment them, but we personally just love them topped with pickles.
WHAT BUNS ARE THE BEST?
Our personal favorite buns to use are brioche, there is just something about brioche that really gets us. But you can use any of your favorite bus for this, sesame, onion roll, regular.
HOW TO STORE:
The meat mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator where it will keep for up to 3 days.
It can also be frozen, to do that place the meat in a freezer container or bag and it will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.
To defrost, remove from the freezer into the refrigerator until thawed. To reheat you can place in the microwave until heated through or place back in a pan with some more beef stock until heated through.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- We like to use a leaner ground beef for this recipe so use at least 80/20.
- Make sure that you drain any grease from the pan.
- You can use other meats for this such as ground chicken, turkey or pork.
- These can be frozen, see above on how to do that.
- Add any additional toppings that you’d like, see above for some ideas.
- Easily double this recipe to serve more people.
