If you want a refreshing Mexican drink that is full of flavor and minimal ingredients then you have to whip up this Horchata Recipe, you won’t be disappointed.
One drink that I have become obsessed with over the years is Horchata. It is seriously one of the most flavorful drinks I’ve ever had in my entire life.
It is rich, smooth, creamy and has a kick of cinnamon to it that makes it absolutely amazing. It is one of those drinks that once you try it you will never forget it.
I got this recipe from my friend Martin many years ago and we’ve been making it since. He loves making us all the Mexican food and we always oblige.
But when it comes to this Horchata Recipe, it has to be one of my favorite things that he has ever given me hands down! I because addicted with my first sip.
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Minimal ingredients and steps make it super simple to whip up.
- You can double the batch for larger crowds.
- You can add more sweetness or omit depending on your flavor preference.
This recipe is seriously a favorite, some other Mexican themed recipes you might like include Easy Guacamole, Slow Cooker Barbacoa Beef and Chicken Taquitos.
HOW TO MAKE THIS HORCHATA RECIPE, STEP BY STEP:
- Place the rice, water, and cinnamon sticks into a blender. Blend on medium speed for one minute, to make sure the rice and cinnamon sticks are well blended. Place into a pitcher or leave in the body of the blender and place in the fridge to steep for 6 hours, or up to overnight.
- Using a fine mesh strainer and cheesecloth, strain the mixture into a large pitcher.
- Add in the heavy cream, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla.
- Stir well to combine fully, serve chilled or over ice.
See how super simple this is to make, the worst part is waiting for it to steep overnight, but it is completely tolerable! I would wait days for this recipe if I had to.
Now this might not be your traditional “Mexican” Horchata Recipe, since it usually uses granulated sugar and we substitute sweetened condensed milk instead.
But this is the recipe that his family has been using for years and we just love it, I think everyone who makes this drink has their own special method of making it and this is how we decided to continue to make ours over the years.
It’s really one of those preferences things and I’m not always going to be spot on with the actual methods on how certain cultures make theirs, so please don’t criticize because things are always adapted over time in any culture.
HOW LONG DOES HORCHATA LAST?
This recipe needs to be remained chilled as it contains milk products. This should last in the refrigerator for about 8-10 days, if it lasts that long which a lot of time it won’t.
The best way to tell if its bad is to remove any cover and smell and you can tell by the smell if it has gone bad or not.
Horchata really doesn’t last too long in our household, luckily all my family members really like this Horchata Recipe, there is something about the flavors that just pull them in.
Even my 6 year old daughter drinks it, she stole my Horchata the last time that we went to our favorite Mexican restaurant.
WHAT DOES THIS TASTE LIKE?
Horchata is a sweet and creamy beverage that has a reminiscence of a rice pudding flavor with a hint of cinnamon. The sugar and vanilla really pull through as well.
You can always add more cinnamon if you want that flavor to protrude in this recipe, but I think the measurements in this specific recipe are the amount that we have come to love.
This really is an easy recipe that you can whip up the night before you have any gathering and want a different and refreshing drink that people can sip on.
Or to just have on hand when that craving calls, we make this every few months because we can’t resist. It is just one of those recipes like I said, we fell in love with at first sip.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Make sure you have a higher powdered blender, this will break down the ingredients well so the flavors really shine through
- Cheesecloth is our favorite thing to strain this through since it doesn’t let any of the remnants in, but you can also use a fine mesh strainer.
- This recipe makes a subtly sweet horchata, for more sweetness add a full 14 ounce can of sweetened condensed milk.*
- Top with cinnamon, it really is something that will add that additional cinnamon flavor.
- Make sure that everything is stirred together very well so that the flavors marry.
- This needs to refrigerate at least 8 hours but preferably overnight to steep the flavors.
If you are looking for a different but tasty drink, then you need to make this Horchata Recipe, once you try it you won’t go back! At least we never did!
