Have you ever been to Panda Express? If you haven’t they have the best Honey Walnut Shrimp that we can’t get enough of, but we don’t always like to do takeout.
So if you’ve read my site for any period of time I do a lot of copycat recipes. I love recreating recipes from our favorite restaurants and make them at home for dinner or as a side dish.
This Honey Walnut Shrimp is just one of the many that we have, but it is one of my absolute favorites! The flavors of this recipe work so well together and everyone loves it.
My family loves shrimp in all ways, shapes and forms but they love this recipe and always wan’t me to make it for dinner, since I love it just as much I’m always happy to make it.
I love the texture that the walnuts give to this dish, you get smooth and creamy with a little bit of crunch and I really love when dishes have different textures.

WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Easily available ingredients help this dish come together nicely.
- This really tastes like the real restaurant version.
- You can double this recipe to serve more, serve as a meal or as a side dish!
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT BOTTOM):
Shrimp
Garlic powder
Onion powder
Kosher salt
Cornstarch
Vegetable oil
Japanese mayonnaise
Sweetened condensed milk
Honey
Lemon juice
Glazed walnuts
Green onions
HOW TO MAKE HONEY WALNUT SHRIMP, STEP BY STEP:
- Place the shrimp in a gallon-sized plastic bag. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and cornstarch to the bag.
- Close the bag and shake it so the shrimp are coated in the cornstarch and seasonings, set aside.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sweetened condensed milk, honey, and lemon juice until smooth, set aside.
- Add about ยฝ inch of vegetable oil to a large skillet with deep sides over medium heat. Test the oil with one of the shrimp if it starts to bubble lightly at the edges it is hot enough. In batches, not touching, fry the shrimp for 2-3 minutes on each side until they are cooked through, curled, and opaque. They will not get a lot of color on them from frying since we are using cornstarch. Drain them on a paper-towel-lined plate while you fry the additional shrimp.
- Add the shrimp and walnuts to a large bowl, pour the sauce on top.
- Toss everything together until combined. Serve with a garnish of green onions.
WHAT IS JAPANESE MAYO, DO I HAVE TO USE IT?
Japanese mayo is made with only the egg yolks rather than American mayo which uses the whole egg. It gives the mayo a deeper yellow color and an almost custard like texture.
For this to be a real copycat I suggest using the Japanese mayo, the brand that we used is Kewpie which you can find at various stores such as Walmart or Amazon!
If you can’t find it you can use regular mayo, but the flavor and texture won’t be quite the same.
WHAT ARE GLAZED WALNUTS?
The glazed walnuts that we use in this recipe are Emerald brand, they are just glazed in a sweet glaze to give them a more sweet flavor. Again, these are readily available at your grocery store.
WHAT CAN I SERVE WITH HONEY WALNUT SHRIMP?
So many different things can be severe with this dish some of our favorites that we often use include:
HOW TO STORE:
Like always, this is best served when it is made but if you have any leftovers you can store in an airtight container for up to 3-5 days. I do not recommend freezing because of the sauce.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- We like to use medium shrimp for this recipe, you can use larger or smaller for your preference.
- If you can’t find Japanese mayo, regular mayo can be substituted but the flavor will not be the same.
- You can easily find glazed walnuts at your local grocer.
- Double this recipe to serve more people.
- Looking for a more breaded shrimp, you can dip them in tempura batter and deep fry them before tossing them in the sauce.
- If you are a sauce lover then I suggest doubling the sauce recipe.
