Easy, hearty, classic and addicting these Homemade Chicken and Dumplings are just like how your grandma used to make them! Thick, creamy and delicious!
I grew up on Chicken and Dumplings, my mom used to make them all year round when I was a kid and I absolutely fell in love with them. I mean how could you not!
When it comes to one comfort food this is one dish that I will always run to when I’m feeling under the weather, or need a pick me up or because the weather is just down in the dumps, this is a classic old-fashioned recipe that you can’t get enough of.
There are so many ways that people have been making chicken and dumplings and trust me, we’ve tried them all. Homemade dumplings, biscuit dumplings, crockpot and slow cooker versions, you name it, we’ve given it a go!
This Homemade Chicken and Dumpling recipe has always been by far my favorite. It is the way my mother made them for me and her mother made them for her. There is something about making your own dumplings that is purely satisfying.
Now this recipe is actually SUPER easy! People thing that it takes so long to make dumplings when in reality it literally takes minutes to mix up and cut a batch, so that is one reason why we keep going back to this simple recipe.
WHAT INGREDIENTS DO YOU NEED?
- Chicken breasts
- Chicken broth
- Flour
- Salt
- Baking powder
- Butter
- Milk
- Pepper
You guys…look at that list!! How much more simple can you get with that! These are things that we keep stocked 100% of the time. I’m a huge fan of all things chicken so we have them in bulk in our freezer.
Also, since we love this time of year chicken stock is something that is always in our pantry by the box/can load. We make a whole bunch of soups and stews that always call for it plus its a nice alternative to adding water to dishes because it gives it a little extra flavor.
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE CHICKEN AND DUMPLINGS:
- In large stockpot add your chicken breasts and chicken broth and bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until chicken is cooked through.
- Meanwhile in a medium sized bowl whisk together flour, salt and baking powder until combined.
- Cut in your butter until incorporated and then stir in your milk until it forms a dough.
- On a WELL floured surface turn your dough out and roll it out to about 1/4″ thickness and then using a knife or a pizza cutter cut into 1 1/2″-2″ squares.
- Once chicken is cooked remove from broth and shred and set aside.
- Add your dumplings to the broth and simmer for about 15-20 minutes until they are “cooked” and they don’t have a doughy flavor.
- Add your chicken back into your broth and dumpling mixture and season with salt and pepper to your liking and heat until chicken is warmed through.
See what I mean when I say that this is a super easy recipe? This is one of those recipes that you really can’t pass up and if you’ve been itching to try it you really really should. Not just because I love this recipe, but because it’s one of those simple ones that you need to keep in your rotation.
WHAT SIDES DO YOU SERVE WITH CHICKEN AND DUMPLINGS?
While homemade chicken and dumplings are a one dish meal in itself you can always add lighter side to go along with it such as:
- Peas
- Steamed broccoli
- Carrots
- Side salad
- Fruit salad
- Bread (we love to dip this in our dumplings)
- Biscuits
This is a go-to recipe that will be feeding a whole family for cheap! This isn’t one of those break the bank meals that you dread making, it is an inexpensive and hearty dish that get’s its money worth from the ingredients and time put into it.
So if you are looking for that perfect recipe for a long cold winter day, a hot summer month, because you’re feeling sick or because you miss home then these homemade chicken and dumplings are just what you need!

I substituted self-rising flour and didn’t use the baking powder. Also tossed in a few slices celery and bits of carrots; the only way I could get my husband to eat his veggies LOL. Served it with garlic bread. Hubby loved it.

You didn’t say how much salt pepper or baking powder to put in the homemade dumplings.
Tornadough Alli
I just checked the recipe card and it absolutely does give the amounts in the ingredients list. I’m not sure where you didn’t see it. Let me know and I can hopefully help you out!

Can this be done in a crockpot? If so, do I just 0ut broth and chicken in crockpot?
Tornadough Alli
I have never done it in a crockpot so I’m not sure, you could cook your chicken in the broth and shred and make the dumplings and add and cover and cook until they seem done!

I think Grandma Toots made fluffy dumplings……….Grandma Frieda possibly made the solid type of dumplings that your Mom loves. I am more a fan of the fluffy dumplings but no matter which type of dumplings you like….it is always a good & comforting dish! Auntie Karen
