With only 5 ingredients and under 30 minutes this Homemade Applesauce is sweet, easy, tasty and everyone loves it. The perfect way to use up those fall apples.
If we can make something homemade around here we like to do it any chance we get and that includes this delicious Applesauce recipe!
My kids have always preferred homemade to the stuff you buy in the stores, mainly for the taste. The ones you buy that aren’t unsweetened are a little too sweet, and the unsweetened isn’t enough for us.
This recipe really has a nice subtle sweetness from both the apples and sugar, and a little spice from the cinnamon, which is the perfect combo.
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- With minimal ingredients and only 30 minutes this is the perfect recipe to whip up when you are craving Homemade Applesauce and is a fun recipe to make with the kids.
- You can pretty much use any kind of apples you have on hand, if you have apple trees with bundles to use or if you simply have some bought from the store.
- This recipe can easily be doubled, triple, etc depending on how much you are wanting to make at one time.
When back to school rolls around, my kids are usually sent to school with some applesauce so we like to keep some on hand at all times, and since it’s so easy to whip up and relatively inexpensive to make, we make it all the time
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE, STEP BY STEP:
Peel, core and dice your apples into about 1″ sized pieces and add to a large pot. Add in your water, lemon juice, sugar and cinnamon (Photos 1-5).
Stir together, bring to a boil and cover and simmer on medium-low for about 20-25 minutes until softened (Photos 6 & 7).
Once soft mash with a potato masher for a chunkier version or use an immersion blender or place in blender and blend until smooth (Photos 8 & 9).
See how easy it is to whip up? It is almost fool-proof. We prefer it on the smoother side so we usually blend it all up with our immersion blender.
WHAT APPLES DO YOU USE FOR APPLESAUCE?
You can pretty much use any baking apple available and some of those include but are not limited to: Granny Smith, McIntosh, Jonagold, Fuji or Honeycrisp. We used Granny Smith for this recipe and we absolutely love it.
We have used a different variety before, you can even use a mixture of different apples if you have half bags here and there and blend them together, they all taste really similar.
HOW TO STORE APPLESAUCE:
This recipe makes about 2 pints of applesauce so to store, we put in pint jars and fit with a lid and place in our refrigerator and it should be good for about a week to 10 days.
You can also freeze it, to freeze it chill it completely in you refrigerator first then place it in a freeze safe storage container that is airtight and place in your freezer where it should stay good for up to 2 months.
If you just can’t eat up your homemade applesauce in time or don’t want to freeze it some of our favorite ways to use up applesauce is Applesauce Bread, Applesauce Cake or this Strawberry Apple Fruit Leather!
This Homemade Applesauce is just one of those recipes that you can’t help to want to make, it’s super easy, super flavorful and doesn’t last long.
When it comes to homemade recipes, this is one that we make the majority of the time during the fall months. We always have an overabundance of apples laying around and don’t always feel like making desserts!

Can it be made without the added sugar?
Tornadough Alli
You can absolutely leave out the sugar if you wish, it won’t be as sweet, but it will still be good!
