WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Minimal ingredients helps this come together in minutes.
- You can easily double this batch to have more for larger amount of desserts
- This can be used as a dip as well.

Salted butter
Powdered sugar
Vanilla extract
Heavy cream
Rainbow sprinkles
HOW TO MAKE FUNFETTI FROSTING, STEP BY STEP:
- In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter on medium-high speed for 3-5 minutes.
- Add the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and beat on low until the powdered sugar is incorporated then beat on a high speed for 3-5 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy. Do not under beat.
- Add the sprinkles and mix until just combined.
- Use to frost a cake or cupcakes or enjoy with Graham Crackers or Teddy Grahams for a fun snack.
CAN I USE UNSALTED BUTTER?
Yes you can. If you use unsalted butter you will need to add ¼ teaspoon salt to this recipe. You can add it at any point.
HOW MUCH DOES THIS MAKE FOR SPECIFIC DESSERTS?
This makes enough frosting for about 12-15 piped cupcakes or 24 cupcakes if you frost with a knife.
Or enough frosting for a 6-inch 3-layered cake or a 2-layered 8-inch cake. If you need to frost and decorate a cake with it, I’d 1.5x or double the recipe.
WHAT IS THE BEST TIP TO USE WHEN PIPING THIS FROSTING?
If you pipe this frosting you have to use a bigger tip or the sprinkles will jam in the tip.
So I recommend using a wilton 1M tip which is an open star tip, or you can use a french star tip as well.
CAN I MAKE THIS AHEAD OF TIME?
If you make this frosting up before wanting to use it right away don’t stir the sprinkles in until ready to use to help make sure the sprinkles don’t bleed.
Store in the refrigerator. Let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes, then use a wooden spoon to re-stir so it’s creamy again. Then add the sprinkles.
HOW TO STORE:
This can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container or bag where it will keep for up to 2-3 days.
You can also freeze this frosting, it is best to be frozen without the sprinkles as they will bleed and can end up turning your frosting brown.
Make you frosting but omit adding the sprinkles and place in a freezer bag or container and it will keep for up to 2 months.
To defrost, remove to the countertop until thawed. Add your sprinkles and then use.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Try to choose a sprinkle that doesn’t bleed into things. Rainbow jimmies are my recommendation.
- Use a larger frosting tip to pipe, see suggestions above
- This can be made ahead of time, see above on suggestions on how to do that.
- Easily double this recipe to decorate more desserts.
- If you use unsalted butter you will need to add ¼ teaspoon salt to this recipe. You can add it at any point.
- If your butter is super soft you will need more powdered sugar. If it’s too hard it will not mix well. 30 minutes at room temperature seems to be the sweet spot for butter in making frosting.
- This can be frozen, see above on how to do that.
- If you want this to taste slightly more like a can of Funfetti frosting you can sub ¼ cup butter and use shortening in its place.
