With only 5 ingredients and 7 minutes this Egg in a Hole is a fun, easy and tasty breakfast recipe that will become a staple. A classic dish, the whole family can enjoy.
If you have never tried an Egg in a Hole or also known in some parts as a Toad in a Hole then you are missing out. It is a quick and easy breakfast recipe that is basic but tasty.
I always think that breakfast is one of the most if not the most important meal of the day to bring energy and fuel to your body and I love both sweet and savory.
I’m going to go with savory on this one. I have literally been making this recipe since I was a kid and have never stopped. When I started making it for my kids when they were younger, they thought it was the coolest thing.
Really it is just an easy recipe where you can combine two common breakfast foods into one, eggs and toast. Those two go hand in hand and are two of my favorite.
Whether you like your eggs over easy and runny or with the yolk hard, you can make this any way. Now I prefer my yolks runny because I love dipping my toast in them.
That is how this recipe is formatted, if you are wanting your yolk on the harder side, then you will want to just cook it for a little bit longer.
Some of my other favorite savory breakfast recipes that we have on our site include: Cheesy Breakfast Potatoes, Copycat Sausage Egg McMuffin and Ham and Cheese Quiche.
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Minimal and on hand ingredients let you make this whenever you like.
- You can cater it to your favorite egg texture.
- Make as many of these as you’d like!
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT BOTTOM):
Brioche sandwich bread
Salted butter

HOW TO MAKE AN EGG IN THE HOLE, STEP BY STEP:
- Using a cookie or biscuit cutter, cut out a 2 & ยฝ inch to 3-inch hole in the center of the bread, set aside.
- In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter and swirl it around the pan. Add the bread and the cutout piece of bread to the skillet. Let cook for 3 minutes.
- Flip the piece of bread over. Gently place the egg in the center of the hole, making sure not to break the yolk. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Cover and cook for an additional 3 minutes or until the egg whites are set and opaque. Serve immediately.
WHAT KIND OF BREAD IS BEST TO USE?
While this is a personal preference I like to use a thicker bread like brioche, challah or texas toast just for the stability.
You can actually use any bread that you want, white, wheat, pumpernickel, rye and more. They will still hold up just fine, so use what you got and what you like.
HOW DO I CUT THE HOLE IN THE MIDDLE?
We like to use a round cookie or biscuit cutter for this. We use a 2 1/2-3-inch cutter and cut the hole out before cooking and we toast that little circle slice alongside the Egg in a Hole.
It is perfect for using as a dipper to dip in your sunny side up egg, so do not throw that piece away if you are a dipper like I am!
WHY IS IT CALLED AN EGG IN A HOLE?
This really speaks for itself, it is the method that the egg is cooked in the hole of the bread. Everything cooks and toasts nicely making it a crispy toast and an egg that is fully cooked how you like it without getting overdone.
HOW TO STORE:
This recipe is intended to be eaten fresh, I don’t recommend storing them especially if you are making the egg sunny side up as you risk breaking the egg and having the yolk go everywhere.
So if you plan on making more, make sure that you are making enough where you will be able to consume all of them at the same time.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Use your favorite bread, we like brioche. See some of our ideas above.
- You can cook the egg as much as you like, we like sunny side up. If you want your yolk harder just cook longer.
- Do not discard the circle piece, toast this up along with it. It makes a great egg dipper.
- You can use a cookie or biscuit cutter for the center off the bread to make the hole.
- Double or triple this recipe and make as much as you’d like.
