With flavorful ingredients and full of cheese, these Cheesy Sloppy Joes are a family hit dinner time meal. They come together in 30 minutes and are a delicious sandwich the whole family can enjoy.
I’m a huge Sloppy Joe person, I mean I love sandwiches of all types. But the sloppier the better in my opinion! I grew up with my mom making some awesome Sloppy Joes.
Over the years obviously we branch out and create our own recipes and sometimes throw things together that just seem to work and these Cheesy Sloppy Joes are one of them.
Let me tell you how delicious these are! With the spices and ingredients and then being served on a pretzel bun, it is a pairing made in heaven for this sandwich.
The kids beg for these all the time and I love making them all the time, it is one meal that our family just cannot get enough of. Once you try them you will see what I mean!
I love that everything is made in one pan, so there is less clean up as well. The less work I have to do with a meal the better, I think we all can agree on that one at least.

WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Easily available ingredients help these come together quick.
- With only 30 minutes from start to finish you spend no time getting dinner to the table.
- You can double this recipe to serve more people or have more for later.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT BOTTOM):
Ground beef
Onion
Bell peppers
Garlic
Pepper
Low sodium beef broth
Worcestershire sauce
Velveeta cheese
Sharp cheddar cheese
Pretzel buns
HOW TO MAKE CHEESY SLOPPY JOES, STEP BY STEP:
- Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the ground beef, onion, and bell peppers, breaking up the ground beef into crumbles. Cook until there is no pink left in the beef, the onions are translucent, and the bell peppers softened, about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Drain any excess grease.
- Add the garlic and black pepper, mix it in, cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, mix it in and simmer for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Turn the heat down to low and add the cubed Velveeta, stir it in until melted. This may take a few minutes.
- Take off the heat and stir in half of the cheddar cheese.
- Add to pretzel buns and top each sandwich with the remaining cheddar. Serve immediately.
DO I HAVE TO USE PRETZEL BUNS?
No, these are really what we love to serve this sandwich on because of the flavor combination but you can use any buns that you like. These are also great open faced on a slice of toast.
WHAT CHEESE IS BEST FOR THIS?
The Velveeta is what really makes this recipe, it is super creamy, I donโt suggest using anything else in its place unless you want to use the white Velveeta.
As for the cheddar, other cheese varieties can be switched out as long as it’s a good melting cheese such as white cheddar, Monterey Jack, mozzarella, Pepper Jack, etc.
CAN I USE OTHER MEATS?
While we use a lean ground beef (at least 85/15) for this recipe, you can absolutely switch up the meats if you like.
This would work great with ground chicken, pork or even turkey! So you have options, test them and see how you like this sandwich the best.
HOW TO STORE:
These Cheesy Sloppy Joes can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator where they will last for up to 3-4 days.
They can also be frozen, place meat mixture into a freezer container and they will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Let defrost in the refrigerator overnight, then you will want to heat the meat mixture back up on the stovetop or microwave before serving.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- While we love ground beef, other meats can be used.
- Other cheese can be used as well, see my tips above.
- Pretzel buns are our go-to for these, but use any buns that you like.

I think spooning this over tortilla chips would make a nice “nacho style” cheesy Sloppy Joe
