A classic dish, this Bananas Foster Recipe is incredibly easy, flavorful and the perfect dessert to end the night with.
When it comes to classic dishes, I’m all for them. Anything banana flavored has always been my favorite and this Bananas Foster Recipe is no different.
I have been making this for as long as I can remember. I think I first had it at a restaurant many years ago and after that I knew I had to have it all the time.
Simple and easy to find ingredients really help this Bananas Foster come together. That is what I love about it so much.
Now you do have to have a kitchen torch or a long handled lighter for this to burn the alcohol off, but that is the “hardest” part if you can even call it that.
The flavor of the bananas with the rum and brown sugar syrup is just divine and served up over some ice cream is our favorite way of enjoying this.
This is great for a late night dessert, an easy elegant treat for guests, or just because you are craving something sweet.
If you have never tried a Bananas Foster Recipe before, now is the time and trust me, you won’t turn back.

HOW TO MAKE A BANANAS FOSTER RECIPE, STEP BY STEP:
- Cut the bananas in half, then cut those halves in half again lengthwise, set aside.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Constantly stirring until the butter and sugars are melted and everything is combined well, this will take roughly 2 minutes.
- Next, add the bananas and stir them around to coat them in the sauce.
- Remove from heat and add the rum.
- Using a kitchen torch or long handled lighter, carefully light the rum on fire, allowing the rum to fully cook off. When the flame disappears it is ready.
- Add the skillet back onto the stove and continue to cook over medium heat until the bananas become soft and the sauce has slightly thickened, this will take roughly 4 more minutes.
- To serve, place the bananas in a bowl or on a plate with some vanilla ice cream and sauce drizzled over the top.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT A BANANAS FOSTER RECIPE:
If you are not a fan of spiced rum you do have some other options. You can use dark rum, light rum, banana liqueur or bourbon.
Yes, you can make this non-alcoholic. In place of the rum you can use pineapple juice or apple juice, you will not need to light it on fire. If you want the rum flavor add some rum extract to the sauce.
No, you are still going to retain about 75% of the alcohol in the dish. So I only suggest serving this to adults.
It is like cooking or baking with alcohol, you are still going to retain some of the alcohol and the lighting process goes quickly so it doesn’t have much time to cook off more of the alcohol.
While we love serving with ice cream and drizzling with the sauce, if you want to give it a little more extra flavor you can top with some whipped cream and nuts like pecans or walnuts.
HOW TO STORE:
To store your Bananas Foster Recipe, place in an airtight container where it will keep for up to 5 days. This recipe does not freeze well.
To reheat, although it may be a little soggy (it is still very tasty), place back in a skillet and heat until the sauce is melted and everything is warmed through.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- This can be made alcohol free, see above on how to do that.
- Other alcohols can be used, see above on suggestions.
- We do not recommend freezing this recipe.
- All of the alcohol does NOT cook off, it retains most of the alcohol content.
- We love to serve this with ice cream, but would be great over a variety of other things you love.
- Top with some whipped cream and chopped nuts for more flavor.
- Make sure you use a kitchen torch or long handled lighter for this when igniting.
