A delicious Chinese dish, this Wonton Soup has tasty pork filled wontons and a tasty broth that is light and filing at the same time.
I absolutely love a good soup recipe, especially when it comes to this Wonton Soup.
Whenever we get Chinese takeout, this is something that I always have to get because honestly it is perfect any time of the year.
How about making it at home? It is super simple, the hardest part is learning how to form the dumplings, which we provide a step by step method below.
Meaty, with a vegetable taste and just so much flavor. This is one soup that is not lacking but still maintains its lightness at the same time.
I love when I can take some of my favorite restaurant recipes and make them at home, and you will be happy you did with this one.
If you’ve been looking for that perfect comforting dinnertime dish, then you absolutely cannot go wrong with this Wonton Soup.
Some of my other favorite soup recipes we have on our site include: Cabbage Roll Soup, Tortellini Soup and Chicken Rice Soup.
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- This makes a nice large batch to serve a crowd.
- You can eat this alone or with some of your other favorite takeout dishes.
- You can switch up the meat inside to your liking.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST):
Ground pork
Green onions
Garlic
Fresh ginger
Soy sauce
Rice vinegar
Cornstarch
Toasted sesame oil
White pepper
Wonton wrappers
Unsalted chicken stock
Kosher salt
White pepper
HOW TO MAKE WONTON SOUP, STEP BY STEP:
- In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the pork, green onion, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, rice vinegar, cornstarch, sesame oil, and white pepper until combined.
- On a clean work surface, place a wonton wrapper. Add 1 teaspoon of the filling to the center.
- Dip a fingertip into water and run it along the edges of the wonton wrapper.
- Fold a pointed end over the filling and secure the edges, pressing out any air. This will create a triangle.
- Make a little indention in the bottom of the wrapper then run a little water on each of the bottom points of the triangle. Bring the points together and secure them by pressing the edges together firmly with your fingers. See above for a step by step process.
- Place wonton on a sheet pan and cover with a clean kitchen towel while you work on the remaining wontons so they donโt dry out.
- Repeat with the remaining filling and wrappers.
- In a large pot over medium heat add the chicken stock, ginger, garlic, green onions, soy sauce, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, cover, reduce to low, and simmer for roughly 10 minutes.
- Using a handheld mesh strainer, lift and discard the solids out of the soup and keep warm.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add as many wontons as you are about to consume to the boiling water. Boil for 4 minutes, they will start to float.
- Take the cooked wontons out of the water and place them into a serving bowl.
- Top with some of the soup and add more green onion. Serve immediately.
CAN I USE ANOTHER MEAT IN THIS SOUP?
Yes, if you are not a huge fan of pork you can absolutely substitute it with ground chicken, ground turkey and even ground beef.
I have seen some recipes go as far as using a ground shrimp mixture as well, we have never tested that bout it sounds amazing.
DO I HAVE TO COOK THE WONTONS SEPARATE FROM THE SOUP?
No, we do this because sometimes we are not going to eat it all right away and make the soup and then boil as much dumplings as we want.
If you are planning on serving everything right away, then you can boil the wontons right in the soup for roughly 4 minutes.
It may get a little thicker from the wonton wrappers but it will still be fine.
CAN I ADD OTHER THINGS TO THE WONTON SOUP?
If you want some more substance to the soup rather than just the wontons and green onions you can absolutely add some. Some of my favorites include:
- Thin Sliced Carrots
- Mushrooms
- Cabbage
- Spinach
- Bok Choy
- Bell Peppers
You can cook these in the soup and leave them in there when you are serving.
CAN I USE FROZEN WONTONS?
If you want you can use frozen wontons for a quicker and easier soup option.
There are various flavors out there that you can use. You can boil them in the water like we did or if you plan on serving right away then boil in the soup.
Make sure that you are using roughly the same amount as we use, this recipe makes about 46 wontons.
HOW TO STORE:
This recipe is best stored separate, place the wontons in one airtight container and the broth in another. Place in the refrigerator and they will keep for up to 3 days.
You can also freeze this recipe, place the assembled wontons on a baking tray and place in the freezer for until frozen. Then place in a freezer container or bag, then place the broth in a freezer container. They will keep frozen for up to 3 months.
To defrost, remove your wontons and broth to the refrigerator until defrosted, then heat the broth on the stove until warmed. You can either cook the wontons in the broth or in water.
Also, you can cook the wontons directly from frozen, they will take slightly longer to cook.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Use another type of meat, see above for options.
- This can be frozen, see above on how to do that.
- Add other vegetables to the soup, see some ideas above.
- Serve the soup with some chili oil or sriracha sauce.
- You can cook the wontons directly in the soup if you are going to eat it all at once.
- You can use frozen wontons if desired, see above on my tips for that.
- Black pepper can be used if desired, white is more potent and keeps the broth clear.
