Creamy, cheesy and the perfect side these Potatoes Au Gratin are the perfect addition to any meal and feed a crowd with minimal ingredients.
Potatoes are a huge favorite in our family. We aren’t too picky when it comes to them we will take them every which way we can get them but when it comes to these Potatoes Au Gratin these might be one of our favorite recipes.
My husband has always been addicted to au gratin potatoes for many years. He was the one who actually got me into them in the first place. I had never been a fan of the “scalloped” style potatoes until we got together about 13 years ago.
These gratin potatoes are a fun and pretty dish that whips up really quickly and bakes up just beautifully. We like to shingle our potatoes to give it a really fun effect but that is personal preference whereas you could always just layer them in a baking dish as well with no issues.
WHAT INGREDIENTS DO YOU NEED?

- Garlic
- Cheese

- Parsley
What is the difference between scalloped potatoes and au gratin potatoes you may ask?
The first difference between the two recipes are the thickness that the potatoes are usually sliced. Scalloped are sliced a little thicker than au grating.
The second difference is that scalloped potatoes are just baked in a cream sauce whereas the au gratin potatoes are baked with cheese as well, which personally gives me the added flavor that I LOVE.
There are pretty much so many different ways that people whip up these recipes that it has come to be more of a personal preference when it comes to actually baking these bad boys up.
While traditionally potatoes au gratin is made with gruyere cheese, it isn’t something that is easily found in our neck of the woods where we live in a super small town so we like to use cheddar, but really you can use any of your favorite shredded cheeses.
The cheese is mixed into the sauce and then also sprinkled on top creating a nice golden cheesy crust which pretty much makes this dish what it is, heaven.
We love to have these gratin potatoes on our holiday dinner table. We are the family that usually does a few different type of potato recipe because people love so many different things.
Some other potatoes we like to serve include:
While my son could live off of boxed instant mashed potatoes all day everyday, yes true story this kid loves them and I came home one time to him eating a huge bowl of potatoes he had made…I don’t know where he gets it.
Anyways, while he could live off of those the rest of our family, him included loves homemade, cheesy and baked versions that take a little more effort than the boxed mix.
HOW DO YOU MAKE THESE AU GRATIN POTATOES?
- Preheat oven to 400.
- In a 2 qt oval or round baking dish butter bottom and sides of dish.
- Peel and slice your potatoes into 1/8″ slices layer your potatoes vertically into dish pressing them down in a slight angle so they look slightly shingled.
- In a bowl whisk together cream, milk, flour, garlic, garlic powder, salt, pepper and 1 1/2 cups of cheese.
- Pour our sauce over your potatoes and life them up slightly so the cream mixture can seep through all the cracks.
- Cover with tin foil and bake in oven for 40 minutes.
- Remove tin foil and sprinkle with remaining cheese and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes until golden.
- Remove from oven and sprinkle with parsley if desired.
While these potatoes look elegant they are really super easy to make, it’s the layering just right that is the hard part. I’m a perfectionist and I like to have them layered just right to make them look so pretty. Raise your hand if you are that way as well.
So if you want a fun and easy yet flavorful dish that works as the perfect side dish recipe, apart of your holiday meal or want your kid to branch out from late night mashed potato fests then these Potatoes Au Gratin are the side you need.
