WHAT IS A PALOMA COCKTAIL?
A Paloma is a tequila based cocktail. It is is most commonly prepared by mixing tequila, lime juice, and a grapefruit juice or grapefruit flavored sodas such as Fresca or Squirt and served with a salted rim on the rocks with a lime wedge.
Now the only change that we made to this Paloma Cocktail Recipe is that we added some simple syrup for sweetness and added the club soda for the bubbly.
I really like to use crushed or pebble ice for this drink as then you don’t have these huge ice cubes in the way that take up the whole glass and you don’t get much cocktail.
Plus it gets less watered down when you serve it that way, just enough ice to have it chilled but not enough to make it watered down and hold it’s flavor.
All around this Paloma Cocktail is a great drink that really refreshes you on a nice warm day in the spring and summer months. Now I still like it year round, but we usually serve it in the warmer months.
DO I HAVE TO USE TEQUILA?
For this drink yes, tequila is used traditionally and we have never made it any different so I can not recommend any other types of liquors to use in it’s place.
If you want to try to swap out the tequila for something else you sure can, but then you will have a whole new drink that you can call what you like.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- We use clear tequila for this recipe.
- Use fresh squeezed or refrigerated grapefruit juice for this recipe, DO NOT use shelf stable juice.
- Use fresh squeezed lime juice for best flavor.
- Simple syrup can be omitted or increased depending on desired sweetness.
- Salt rim can be omitted.
- You can use sodas listed above if you don’t like the flavor of straight grapefruit juice.
